SUMMARY: There is little or nothing to celebrate in Haiti, 200 years after its people won independence from France to become the world's first black republic. But President Jean-Bertrand Aristide intends to celebrate the anniversary today, regardless of the fact that by spending money on festivities and invited foreign guests, he will be insulting the Haitian people.Day in and day out, most Haitians are mired in poverty and beset by violence. Long the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, Haiti is getting poorer. Four-fifths of its population earns less than $2 a day and life expectancy has fallen from 55 to 49 years in the last decade.
