Santo Domingo.- The 13th Meeting the Rio Group and the European Union began yesterday in afternoon in the Foreign Relations Ministry with two parallel gatherings, in preparation for the meeting of ministers on Friday, when the conclave ends.
Foreign minister Carlos Morales has stated that Dominican Republic, the Rio Group’s pro tempore secretariat, would place the situation in Haiti at the center of the talks.
Johannes Cromner, the European Union’s lead representative in the summit, confirmed that Haiti will be the central topic next Friday.
Morales said the country proposed the topic to take advantage of the presence of senior officials of the EU and the Rio Group (the latter compose the peacekeeping force in Haiti). The official added that it’s also a way to provide follow-up of the international effort which his country has initiated prompting the international community to increase assistance to Haiti.
