IS II TRUE THAT IN HAITI MOTHERS USE TO TEST THEIR DAUGHTERS TO SEE WHETHER OR NOT THEY ARE VIRGINGS. IN DANTICAT'S NOVEL, (which was well-written) THE GRANDMOTHER TESTED HER DAUGHTER, THEN LATER AS A MOTHER THE WOMAN TESTED HER DAUGHTER.

CAN SOMEONE TELL ME IF THIS IS TRUE? PERHAPS, IF IT DID HAPPEN BACK IN THE OLD DAYS. PERSONALLY I CAN'T SAY I'VE HEARD OF SUCH PRACTICE IN HAITI.

Il ne faut pas oublier que haiti est un pays en plus du vaudou a une tradition judéochrétienne très très développée, ce cette pratique qui était aussi de rigueure en europe mais c'étaient les bonnes soeurs qui en avaient l'autorité j'ai souvent entendu parlé de cette pratique, surtout dans la paysannerie , et je ne suis pas très vieux, certains parents dans les pays musulmans continuent ce genrent de pratique parceque dans la mentalité de ces gens la virginitée d'une jeune fille est le signe d'une éducation sticte et rigoureuse

Yes they usta to do that because i've heard of such tell from my family. but believe me. that kinda shit need to go. that like invading someone's privacy.

I read that book and i thought is was pretty sad. there are lots of traditions that Haitian needs to let go off because it hurt more than it repairs. eek

I tryded to gave an explanation, more or less... the reason why people much more in the country side of haïti used to do that, as i can see that none of you have reacte about my words!!! it is maybe because that all of you only speek english.... all i can tell you is haïti is not a special case. In all islamic country they do that and they still do it ; ther 's a lott of reason which explain such maners but it would cost e me too much to express al that in english ............

of course they youse the finguer for that ,and in a certain privecy it is the grand ma or "SAGE FEMME" it's like a nurse in the country side. you have to know that the futur of a young girl in the past in europe for exemple depended on the richer husband that her father can find for her, and the virginity of a young girl at that time was the signe of "vertu" and a good education, ther is in the "midle east " and in the north of africa a lot of fight from ladys association agains that practice.

This is not the first time I'm reading about this, but its plain disgusting and its not a constructive act. I'm sorry it has happen to you Fleurnoire, I mean you just have to communicate your perspectives on this subject to your peeps. And if the Haitian still practice it, along with the rest (islamic country and euporean side) they really have to let go of this lame tradition............
