According to a report released by the U.S Census Bureau, last week, Somerset County (including towns such as Warrenville, Watchung, and Baskin Ridge) was found to be the wealthiest in the nation. Its median annual household income is $89,289, way above the national median income of $43,527.
Please remember that the average income has little to do with the median income. It is also important to underline that the survey encompasses only large counties, of populations above 200,000 people. Otherwise a small county such as Teton County, Wyoming (home to Dick Cheney), where the median income is $107,000, would probably top the list.
This dubious honor of wealthiest in the nation was wrestled away from Orange County (?), California that held the title in the previous survey three years ago.
The average 3-bedroom house in Somerset costs ½ a million dollars, and commands a property tax of $10,000 a year.
With a median income of $58,588 a year, the State of New Jersey is now the wealthiest in the nation, followed by New Hampshire, Connecticut, Maryland and Massachusetts (not necessarily in this order).
The poorest county in the nation is Hidalgo, Texas (median income $24,926), just ahead of the Bronx, NY.
Arkansas, Mississippi, Louisiana, and the District of Columbia are the poorest states in the nation (though D.C is not really a state).
If New Jersey was a country, it would be the wealthiest in the world, in family income, just ahead of Luxembourg.
Of note: 8.2% New Jerseyans live below poverty level.
