PRESIDENT Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has authorized the deployment of additional 200 soldiers to the troubled Central American state of Haiti.
In her speech Tuesday at the 107th founding anniversary of the Department of Foreign Affairs in Malacañang, the President said sending of additional forces was part of the country?s ?engagement in the world in keeping peace.?
?Through you we serve in the peacekeeping, in healing the sick in times of disaster, in manning the ramparts on the world order,? she said.
Filipino peacekeepers have been in Haiti since November and serve as the headquarters support unit of the Mission des Nations Unies pour la Stabilisation en Haiti (MINUSTAH.)
Aside from the 135-member military contingent, there are also two military staff officers and 10 civilian police officers in the mission helping to restore stability in the country.
The Philippines is the 26th largest troop contributor to UN peacekeeping operations.
There are 462 troops and police officers deployed in missions in Afghanistan, Burundi, Cote d'Ivoire, East Timor, Haiti, Kosovo, and Liberia.
