NAACP: National Association for the Advancement of Colored People
I thought the African Americans didn't like to be called "colored". How come they used it in NAACP?

NAACP was founded in 1909 when we used to be called COLORED. That was a long time ago before we called ourselves BLACK, then AFRICAN AMERICAN (then rainbow children?). The association is probably waiting until we make up our mind as to what we should be called. As far as I am concerned I am BLACK, I usually cross out african american and write Black (silly?).

It's also silly that they have not changed NAACP to NAABP. This organization does not represent the other minorities so why the word colored.
In my opinion, this confusion is making all blacks living in the USA look bad. Do you know how many "African Americans" interpret our national pride and cultural differences? They think that Haitians feel that they are not black. Although lately we don't have much to be proud of but most of us hold on to our heritage with pride.
I would not mind if all blacks in the USA (including Haitians) stood behind the Black Americans. But it's not going to happen until they stop calling themselves "African American" or even worse "Colored".

I agree with you. Calling oneself "african american" is so wide. I am of african descent, the girl from Martinique, Jamaica, etc. as well are african descent. To me they just want to seperate themselves from other blacks.

Well, I suppose they say African American just like they say Caucasians, Asiatics, etc...
It's a wide term which in it's context tend to narrow itself down, Haitians, Jamaicans ...
Please note on the other side of this continent, they are widely referred as Americans
