Meet 2pac and Bily, brothers with broad smiles and big guns. In the Haitian slum of Cité Soleil, 2pac and Bily are among a cadre of notorious gang leaders whose foot soldiers are known as chimères, or ghosts. Former Haitian President Jean-Bertrand Aristide reputedly employed the chimères to attack his opponents. Director Asger Leth had remarkable access to this gang culture in the months leading up to Aristide?s overthrow in 2004. The resulting film is a Caribbean epic of family, love and violence.
2pac and Bily have big aspirations that sometimes collide. They both fall for the same woman, Lele, a French relief worker; she?s drawn to them even as she recognizes their ?power over life and death, including mine.? 2pac and Bily sometimes skirmish with each other?s soldiers. When everyone carries a gun and a spliff, tensions can escalate in a heartbeat.
Allegiances constantly shift: between 2pac and Bily, gang leaders and politicians, Aristide and the rebels. Bily wants to go legit and join Aristide?s Lavalas political party. 2pac is fed up with Aristide; he dreams of giving up guns and battling with rap lyrics instead. (Indeed, he takes his name from Tupac Shakur.)
In Ghosts of Cité Soleil, the camera achieves an astonishing intimacy, from bedroom romance to street warfare. The colours are saturated, with heat radiating from every surface. The director knows this country well: his father, Jørgen Leth, has made films in Haiti since the early eighties and lived there since 1991.
Wyclef Jean collaborates on the haunting score and also appears in the film. From Haiti, 2pac calls Jean on the phone in New York City. Cameras capture both ends of this conversation between two modern Haitian legends. It?s one of several points where the viewer might wonder, Is this for real? The larger-than-life drama of Haiti seems a world away from the comfort and security of the United States. When Jean gets off the phone, he remarks, ?That ain?t no Hollywood movie, that?s just the truth.?
- Thom Powers
Asger Leth has made several short films including Gala (96) and Again. Today (97) and worked as assistant director on Jørgen Leth?s documentary short New Scenes from America (02). He also was a writer and assistant director on Jørgen Leth and Lars von Trier?s feature documentary The Five Obstructions (03), which screened as part of the Festival?s Real to Reel programme. Ghosts of Cité Soleil (06) is his first feature-length film.

news Toronto International Film Festival 2006: Festival Notebook

Star-studded premieres a banquet for Hollywood junkies
ALEXANDRA GILL
TORONTO -- Roll out the red carpets and slap on some glitter: The 31st edition of the Toronto International Film Festival kicks off tonight. For the next nine days, the city will be swarming with Hollywood heavies, international auteurs and A-list stars.
The Festival Notebook will be here each day to keep you abreast of all the celebrity silliness and late-night shenanigans. It's going to be madness. I've stocked up on mineral water, pulled out my stalking stilettos and had one monster dose of vitamin B shot into my backside.
Yes, vitamin B (1 and 12). It's a sure-fire survival technique that was taught to me long ago by TIFF managing director Michelle Maheux. You think these tireless festival organizers get by on caffeine and popcorn alone?
I've got more insider tips and treats to come. But let's get to business and see what this magical movie week has in store.
Brad . . . and family?
The yummiest daddy in all of Namibia arrives on Saturday for the gala screening of Mexican director Alejandro González Iñárritu's much buzzed-about Babel. Celebrity gawkers will remember how Brad Pitt stole the spotlight in Cannes last May, even in his absence, with effusive apologies about a certain new member of the family who was about to drop any minute.
The burning question in Toronto this week is whether hot mama Angelina Jolie will be here too. Cynics say it would be a smart publicity move, given all the new (and surely ridiculous) gossip about Mr. Pitt's alleged desire to patch things up with Jennifer Aniston. Mind you, there are other professional reasons for Ms. Jolie to grace Toronto with her luscious, puffy-lipped presence.
On Saturday, director Asger Leth will also be premiering Ghosts of Cité Soleil. Ms. Jolie is a co-producer of the Caribbean drama. And there's a party lined up at the Premiere Film & Music Lounge, where hip-hop artist Wyclef Jean will be performing. Sounds like a love song made in tabloid heaven.
Sounds like the movies
Speaking of music, live performances are all the rage on the festival party circuit this year. In addition to Mr. Jean, the Premiere lounge will showcase soundtrack artists Joshua Radin, Schuyler Fisk and Cary Brothers at Sunday night's party for The Last Kiss, which stars indie-music booster Zach (Garden State) Braff.
On Thursday night, Time magazine is throwing an elegant soirée for Canadian singer-songwriter Chantal Kreviazuk, following the premiere of Pretty Broken, a short film about mental illness which she wrote, produced and stars in. The Juno winner will be tinkling the ivories in a black-and-white room filled with candles.
"Live music helps draw even more star wattage to a festival party," says Ellen Huang, director of the Queer Lounge, a hub of events for gay films and gay-friendly festival goers. This new import from Sundance will be throwing two music extravaganzas (with tickets available to the public) at the Phoenix Concert Theatre: for Shortbus (featuring the film's star and CBC radio host Sook-Yin Lee, Gentlemen Reg, Bitch and the Exciting Conclusions, among others) and The Bubble (with a performance by Hawksley Workman).
The Dixie Chicks, alas, will not be performing on Tuesday night at the Drake after the gala premiere of Shut Up and Sing, the Barbara Kopple documentary about the controversial country trio.
But Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony might very well surprise guests with an impromptu duet at Tuesday's late-night party for El Cantante (which J.Lo stars in and also produced).
The anti-celebrity
The tabloids can have Ms. Lopez and Mr. Pitt and all the other top-shelf stars who will be oozing glamour galore on the red carpets. I prefer my celebrities down and dirty. And it really makes my toes curl when they sprout funny mustaches, sport hairy chests and spew politically incorrect jokes.
Yes, Sacha Baron Cohen (aka Ali G) descends on Toronto tonight. Tonight! For the Midnight Madness premiere of Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan -- a ridiculously rude mockumentary in which the intrepid television journalist wisecracks his way across America to meet his idol Pamela Anderson.
Mr. Cohen was the toast of Cannes when he strutted across the Croisette in a teeny-weenie green bikini stretched up over his shoulders. There's no telling what he'll wear tonight.
But you can be sure that's where I'll be, planted on the sidewalk outside the theatre with bells on, or maybe a rubber blow-bra to grab his attention.
Stober's rules
You haven't received invites to any TIFF events yet? No worries. Jeffrey Stober, owner of the Drake Hotel, has some tips for gate-crashing.
"Pick your spots, pick your times and go against the current," says Mr. Stober, who has hosted festival parties in previous years for Woody Harrelson, Nick Nolte and others. "The Drake is always open for business. Find an hour when it isn't busy and you're in."
