American Airlines increasing flights in New York
Carrier raising stakes in showdown with Continental and JetBlue
Updated: 8:23 a.m. ET Feb 22, 2007
DALLAS - American Airlines is adding flights to and from New York, raising the stakes in a showdown pitting the nation?s largest carrier against Continental Airlines Inc. and storm-battered JetBlue Airways Corp.
American said Thursday that it will begin nonstop service between New York and Las Vegas ? a JetBlue stronghold ? in September, and add a few flights to other cities, including San Francisco.
The appeal of New York is obvious. It is the nation?s largest city, a major tourist destination and a hub for international flights.
Perhaps even more important to American, New York is the nation?s financial center and home to a large chunk of the Fortune
500. That creates a large number of first- and business-class travelers.
?They buy the premium seats and they fly the premium business routes ? L.A., Heathrow (in London), Asia. It?s of particular interest to us because it?s a lucrative corporate market,? said David Cush, senior vice president for global sales at American?s parent, AMR Corp.
American is putting $1.1 billion into a new terminal at New York?s John F. Kennedy International Airport. It is also spending about $20 million to add amenities such as lie-flat seats and flat-screen televisions in first class on its Boeing 767 fleet, which will be used heavily in New York service, Cush said.
With that type of investment, the additional flights that Fort Worth-based American was announcing Thursday appear very modest.
It will add a sixth daily flight from JFK to San Francisco in August, a fourth flight from LaGuardia Airport to Atlanta in April, new American Eagle service to Cincinnati (four daily flights) and Louisville, Ky. (two flights), and a few other additions to places such as Haiti and Venezuela.
Cush conceded that the new service ?is probably not huge in the number of departures or seats, but it?s critical in the number of additional markets we?re covering. Cincinnati and Louisville are growing as corporate markets.? He predicted the Las Vegas flights will be loaded with Europeans using New York as a stepping stone to the gambling mecca.
American executives believe they can increase their share of the New York market. But Ray Neidl, an airline analyst at Calyon Securities in New York, said American faces tough obstacles, including Continental?s hub just across the Hudson River in Newark, N.J., and JetBlue?s dominance at JFK, where it accounts for more than one-fourth of all departures.
American expects to operate the additional New York flights with planes shifted from hubs in Dallas-Fort Worth and Chicago. Neidl said that was a wise approach, because it means American won?t be increasing its overall supply of seats for sale ? just moving some of them to a richer market.
Continental offers about 50 percent more daily seats in the New York area than American, and it has added flights from Newark to additional cities in Europe in the past year. Dave Messing, a spokesman for Houston-based Continental, predicted that American?s additional flights at LaGuardia and JFK would mostly compete with JetBlue and Delta Air Lines Inc.
Cush said it was coincidence that American is announcing its New York plans a week after JetBlue stranded hundreds of passengers on local runways for up to 10 hours during a storm.
Jenny Dervin, a spokeswoman for New York-based JetBlue, was confident a new terminal will help prevent a repeat, and that customers won?t stay mad forever.
She added that by the time American begins service with a single daily nonstop to Las Vegas, JetBlue will be operating six daily nonstops on the route. JetBlue also announced last month it would begin service to San Francisco in May.
Of the new competition in New York, Dervin said, ?That?s life in the big city.

news American Airlines Launches New York Initiative

American Airlines Launches New York Initiative
NEW YORK, Feb. 22 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- American Airlines (Nachrichten) is launching an initiative to become the clear-cut airline of choice for passengers in the New York market. In the coming weeks and months, American will demonstrate its commitment to New York with additional routes, enhanced offers, and promotions.
American, the world's largest airline and a founding member of the oneworld(R) Alliance, and American Eagle combine to carry more than 16 million passengers each year to and from the five New York-area airports (John F. Kennedy, LaGuardia, Newark, White Plains/Westchester County, and Newburgh/Stewart) on more than 175,000 flights to and from more than 60 business and leisure destinations.
"We want to make it crystal clear that American Airlines and American Eagle are the airlines of choice for the greater New York area," said David Cush, American's Senior Vice President of Global Sales. "It's no secret that New York is a critical market for all major airlines, especially American, and we intend to be New York's favorite airline through some of the actions we have begun taking, as well as those coming in the months ahead.
"For more than 80 years, we have offered convenient service from the New York market to locations throughout the U.S. and the world. We offer competitive pricing on all of our routes. We are the largest U.S. airline flying out of New York to London and the Caribbean, as well as from JFK and LaGuardia to Canada. Our 8,300 New York-area employees are among the largest airline workforce in this region, and they are proud of our legacy. We want to be No. 1 -- the preferred airline -- in New York," Cush said.
New York-area customers already have started to receive a taste of what American Airlines has in store for them in 2007 and in the years to come. For example:
-- Last month, American announced upgrading its seasonal service between Rome and the United States to year-round service beginning April 10. Using Boeing 767-300 widebody aircraft, American will fly daily from John F. Kennedy International Airport to Rome's Fiumicino/Leonardo da Vinci Intercontinental Airport. Then for the low-peak travel season, beginning Oct. 28 and continuing through March 31, 2008, the service will be flown three times per week from JFK (Tuesday, Friday and Sunday) and four times a week from Chicago's O'Hare International Airport (Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday). -- Earlier this month, American Airlines offered customers who buy a roundtrip First or Business Class ticket for travel between JFK and London's Heathrow Airport through May 31 the opportunity to earn up to three free* trips anywhere American flies in the United States (including Hawaii and Alaska), Canada, Mexico or the Caribbean. -- Two weeks ago, American launched a promotion allowing passengers flying Business Class from JFK to Heathrow through March 31 the opportunity to get a free upgrade to First Class when purchasing a qualifying** Business Class fare. -- American's new, $1.1 billion state-of-the-art terminal at JFK will be completed later this summer, which will provide for the region's future travel needs for years to come. The new terminal will feature nearly 1.5 million square feet, 36 gates, 101 ticketing positions (more than any other airline at JFK), and 10 security checkpoint lanes that can process more than 1,900 passengers an hour. -- American is beginning to phase in a feature on its AA.com website that allows AAdvantage program members to more easily find dates to book award travel using frequent-flyer miles. -- American plans to spend more on advertising in 2007 than in previous years to have the loudest voice in New York. The company plans to promote its message and service enhancements via various media. New Service to Cincy, Raleigh/Durham, Atlanta, Louisville, SF, Vegas and more
And, much more is coming. For example, effective April 10, American Eagle will add new service from LaGuardia Airport to Cincinnati. American Airlines will add one mainline jet flight to complement existing American Eagle service from LaGuardia to Raleigh/Durham, N.C., making it the only airline to offer mainline jet service between LaGuardia and Raleigh/Durham. Service from Atlanta to LaGuardia will be converted to all mainline jet service with four daily flights (details provided below). Later this year, American Eagle plans to begin service from LaGuardia to Louisville, Ky.
West-bound travelers from New York will also benefit. Later this summer, American will add a sixth daily flight from JFK to San Francisco. That will boost American's transcontinental service to 22 daily flights from JFK and Newark to Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego and Seattle.
New service from JFK to Las Vegas will begin in September to give New York-area customers a new leisure destination. The new service from JFK will also benefit American's international customers and international customers arriving on oneworld airlines through easy connections.
For passengers traveling to the Caribbean and South America, American plans to increase the number of weekly roundtrips later this year between JFK and Port-au- Prince, Haiti, and Caracas, Venezuela.
Premium Services for NY Travelers
The additional flights build on American's recent investments in premium- class products and facilities used by New York-area travelers. For example:
-- Passengers will get to enjoy American's Next Generation Business Class on the airline's 767-300 and 777 aircraft beginning this year, making business travel that much more comfortable for passengers on international flights originating from JFK. -- American's $20 million investment in its 767-200 aircraft flown between JFK and Los Angeles and JFK and San Francisco will provide approximately 11,000 new First Class seats annually, lighter and brighter interiors, and new inflight entertainment to complement the already redesigned First and Business Class transcontinental menus. -- Four Admirals Club(R) lounges - two at JFK, and one each at LaGuardia and Newark - offer customers a quiet oasis to work or relax before or after flights. A new Flagship Lounge at JFK for international First and Business Class passengers will open later this summer. -- American recently enhanced its Admirals Club and Flagship Lounge policy to allow full fare or AAdvantage Award*** Business Class passengers flying on three-class Transcontinental aircraft complimentary access into the Admirals Club lounge and full fare or AAdvantage Award*** First Class passengers complimentary access to its Flagship Lounge. -- More than 70 Self-Service Check-in machines are located at New York area airports, including 33 at JFK, 29 at LaGuardia and 10 at Newark. Last year, more than 3.2 million customers used the convenient machines to help speed them through the terminal and on to their flights. International check-in is available via self-service for passengers traveling beyond the U.S. from JFK and LaGuardia. Passengers can also purchase Admirals Club day passes, upgrades, and confirmed flight changes on the self-service machines.
"American's new terminal at JFK is world class in every respect," said Chuck Imhof, American's Vice President of Passenger Sales - Greater New York. "From the dramatic 57,000-square foot lobby in the Main Terminal with its 65- foot ceiling, to the two new Admirals Club Lounges and Flagship Lounge providing approximately 30,000 square feet of luxury, the terminal is truly fitting of the stature of a great city like New York. All of us at American and American Eagle are thrilled that we can offer this to our customers."
In the Community
Together, American and American Eagle employ approximately 8,300 people in the New York area, and approximately 4,500 retirees. The airlines' presence indirectly supports an additional 182,000 jobs in the region, making the two airlines key participants in the area's economy. Overall, American and American Eagle combined to spend $1.75 billion in New York in 2006. The company is estimated to have an $11.1 billion impact on the New York economy.
American's and American Eagle's impact in New York also is evident in community, civic and volunteer activities. American provides sponsorships and in-kind giving to organizations and events throughout the New York area such as Citymeals-on-Wheels, the Lincoln Center Theater, the annual Puerto Rico Day and Chinese New Year parades, the American Foundation for AIDS Research, the Alvin Ailey Dance Foundation, and Aaron Davis Hall Performing Arts. In addition, airline employees are involved in service organizations throughout the metropolitan area, helping to bring people together to build better communities and to enhance the area's quality of life.
"American and American Eagle are proud to have been a part of the New York community - professionally and personally - for so many years," said Imhof. "We are committed to New York and grateful for the longtime support we have received here. And we look forward to providing our customers even more in the years ahead."

A brand-new start of it in old New York
To fight JetBlue, American has new routes and marketing starting today, to make ...
11:01 PM CST on Wednesday, February 21, 2007
For 80 years, American Airlines Inc. has operated in New York. Of late, though, its market share in the area has been eroding, primarily because of the rapid growth of youngster JetBlue Airways Corp.
Recognizing that it needs to protect its slice of the Big Apple, American plans to announce today that it's launching new routes from the New York area airports.
More important, though, the world's largest carrier wants to start spreading the news that it intends to defend the New York market.
"It's important to be big in New York because it is the largest, most lucrative travel market in the world," said C. David Cush, senior vice president of global sales at Fort Worth-based American.
No. 1 may be a little ambitious. Continental Airlines Inc. last year carried 20.7 million passengers, for a 19.9 percent market share at New York's airports, primarily out of Newark, N.J.
American, the longtime No. 2 in the New York region, had a 14.2 percent market share, with 14.8 million passengers. But unless it acts aggressively to hold off JetBlue, it may soon be No. 3.
JetBlue, which began flying in February 2000, carried 13.6 million passengers in 2006, good for 13 percent of the market.
Measuring just domestic service, JetBlue is second only to Continental in the market, with 13.2 million passengers to Continental's 14.4 million. American is third, with 10.8 million domestic passengers.
In total traffic, JetBlue has surpassed American at John F. Kennedy International Airport, with 11.6 million passengers to American's 7.9 million last year. As its recent weather-related problems at JFK showed, a lot of New Yorkers depend on JetBlue to fly.
But while American's relative position has slipped, it's still powerful. The New York market is so big and fragmented that no carrier has an insurmountable lead, as opposed to most large cities that have one major airline that carries over half the traffic from the main airport.
Making it there
The size of the market makes it imperative that American try to deepen its roots.
"It's where you want to be," airline consultant Darryl Jenkins said, "just because there's so many people there. It's the biggest city in the United States, so you want a big presence there."
Mr. Cush said the New York area has to be emphasized because of all the potential business travelers who work or visit there.
"When you look at the corporate base out of New York, the number of Fortune 100 and Fortune 500 firms that are based there, obviously it's significant as a financial and media center," Mr. Cush said.
"It's critical not only from a New York point-of-origin standpoint, but also for all of our corporate business. Our corporate customers in Los Angeles and Dallas count on our New York service. It's really a critical cog in our entire corporate travel proposition."
American plans to launch service in April from New York's LaGuardia Airport to Cincinnati, a major hub for Delta Air Lines Inc. In September, it plans to start service from LaGuardia to Louisville, Ky., and from Kennedy to Las Vegas, American's first Vegas service from New York.
Atlanta ? Delta's largest hub, which American began serving from New York with a mix of regional and mainline jets in 2005 ? will be converted entirely to the larger jets. Raleigh-Durham will get a mix of regional jets and large jets, rather than the all-regional-jet service now offered.
From Kennedy, American intends to add another daily flight to San Francisco, five more weekly flights to Port-au-Prince, Haiti, and a couple more weekly flights to Caracas, Venezuela.
It has opened about half of its new $1.1 billion terminal at JFK, with the next phase opening in May. By then, its Boeing 767-300s flown on international routes will all have lie-flat seats in the business sections, and its Boeing 777s will get them.
On its Boeing 767-200s that fly on the trans-continental routes, American has added new first-class seats, upgraded business class and put in new passenger entertainment equipment.
And American plans to tell New Yorkers about its service more loudly than in the past, even though its advertising budget for New York was already its largest.
"What the people in New York will see is a much more visible, much more aggressive American Airlines," Mr. Cush said.
"This announcement is the first of what we feel will be a series of announcements over the rest of this year to position ourselves as the airline of New York, which is what we consider ourselves to be," he said.
"You can't become the airline of New York when you've only been in existence for seven years," Mr. Cush said in a pointed reference to JetBlue. "We're part of the fabric of the city. What people will see from us over the coming months is going in and reasserting that position."
Matching JetBlue
Mr. Jenkins said American hadn't been succeeding in simply trying to match JetBlue's prices. He applauded American's approach of emphasizing quality of service, with its first-class, business-class and coach sections and wide-body jets on its trans-continental service to Los Angeles and San Francisco.
"JetBlue did change things," Mr. Jenkins said. "There is no doubt about that. For years, JFK-LAX was like one of the great routes of the world. That's where you made most of your money, with those trans-cons. JetBlue entering into those trans-con markets out of JFK really did change the dynamics."
Mr. Jenkins said American may not have focused enough on New York in the recent past, particularly since the 2001 terrorist attacks.
"Since 9/11, the attention was basically on surviving," he said. "I think the attention now is moving to making money and growing. I don't know if they wavered in their attention, but certainly they were preoccupied with other things."
Another industry consultant, Julius Maldutis, said American's new focus on New York, including service quality, was a "very important strategic" move with the strong traffic outlook for 2007.
"Consumers now are judging airlines on the quality of their service, the whole package," Mr. Maldutis said. "While everyone cut their service, Continental was the only one that maintained it ? giving pillows, meals and maintaining quality of service ? and it was shown that that it was the right move. In my opinion, American's move is a very important, positive move, recognizing what their public wants."
On international service to Europe, American focuses its efforts on London's Heathrow Airport, where its passengers can connect to 83 destinations through business partner British Airways PLC, including 67 to Europe.
Continental and Delta have both added a number of international destinations from Newark and JFK. In June, Continental launches service to Athens, Greece, its 16th country and 29th city across the Atlantic.
Delta touts its service to 34 international airports from JFK, and that it has more flights to more places from JFK and La Guardia than any competitor. It plans to add flights to Bucharest, Romania; London's Gatwick Airport; and Pisa, Italy, this summer.
American serves only five European cities from JFK with its own service. However, Mr. Jenkins said American's reliance on Heathrow connections and British Airways is "a "perfectly legitimate strategy. It's one that pretty much guarantees that you'll make money."
