It is definitely true that more of the crimes reported in the nightly television news are committed by the poor, the minorities, and the immigrants. But related statistics are clear: whoever you are, you are most likely to be victimized by people of your ethnic own group, in your own community.

Meaning: immigrants and minority don?t commit more crimes, it is only that petty and common crimes are much less likely to be in the news when their perpetrators are wealthy, well connected, or live far from the downtown police station.

Immigration is vital for countries like the U.S and the Western European nations where the birth rate is much too low to sustain the expansion rate of their economies and the burden of taxes levied to contribute to the welfare of the sick and the retired.

Besides, countries at high level of immigration usually received the best (la crème de la crème) from other countries. Young, bright people eager to work and study are usually the ones to emigrate, the ones to bring their contribution to their adopted patria.

Immigrants disproportionately take jobs and positions disdained by nationals. Yes, they clean the streets, but they are also an overwhelming majority at university science Ph.D. programs and inner city medical centers, for example.

The contribution of immigrants and their sons and daughters to the grandeur of the United States of America is paramount. We could talk about Kennedy and Silverstein, Michael Bloomberg and Peter Jennings. We won?t.

Remember Albert Einstein, the American whose ideas, when applied, helped transform the U.S in today?s the sole super power. Albert Einstein was born in Vienna.

Turn to Colin Powell who is running the U.S diplomacy in this period of crisis. His father was born in Jamaica.

Salute Rudolf Guiliani, the Man of the Year, the Mayor of America, the symbol of American resolve, the figure that will illustrate the page on September 11, in all history books. Rudy is the son of an Italian immigrant with proven solid links to a criminal organization, Cosa Nostra.
