CAP-HAITIEN, Haiti - Rebel leader Guy Philippe said on Sunday his forces would head for Haiti's chaotic capital "to give security to the people" and to stop an outbreak of violence that erupted after President Jean-Bertrand Aristide resigned and fled the country.

"We're going to the capital to give security to the people," Philippe told The Associated Press.
Speaking from a rebel base north of the northern port city of Cap-Hatien, he said he hoped no country would give refuge to Aristide, who fled Haiti early Sunday morning for an undisclosed destination. There were reports Aristide might be headed for South Africa. South African officials said that was not true.
