I visited with the Haitian political prisoner Mr. Jocelerne Privert in his hospital room in Port au Prince this past Friday, 1 April 2005. He appears to be in reasonably good physical health considering his recent hunger strike. He is understandably EXTREMELY upset at having been (illegally) detained for almost one year without due process. Since the international community has re-established freedom and democracy in Haiti, and if there are legitimate criminal charges against this man, I would suggest that it is in Haiti's best interest for everyone to insist that M. Privert be immediately given a fair and open trial in an impartial court of law. I must say that it's really upsetting to come face to face with a political prisoner who has been deprived of access to the legal system, regardless of whatever wrongdoing he's been accused of.
All the best, MONSIEUR NICHE
