Brooklyn Celebrates Caribbean-American Heritage Month
June 02, 2006
Brooklyn is saluting its Caribbean residents with the first-ever national Caribbean-American Heritage Month," featuring the distinctive sounds, rhythms and flavor of the Caribbean.
Officials say Brooklyn is the logical place to kick off a month honoring the borough that has been dubbed ?the Caribbean capital of America.?
People from Caribbean countries including Jamaica, Haiti and the Dominican Republic say the commemoration is overdue.
?The whole of the Caribbean - whether English speaking, French speaking, Spanish speaking Dutch speaking, Papiamento speaking - have played a tremendous part in the development of every aspect of this country," Trinidad & Tobago Consul General Harold Robertson said Friday.
A national bill creating Caribbean-American Heritage Month was passed in February.
Events are planned throughout the month, including an arts festival on Ellis Island on June 24th.
