Priests from Haiti, Cuba among new Brooklyn Diocese bishops
NEW YORK -- Three priests with long experience working with ethnic communities have been appointed auxiliary bishops of the Diocese of Brooklyn by Pope Benedict XVI, it was announced Tuesday.
Msgr. Guy A. Sansaricq, Msgr. Octavio Cisneros and Msgr. Frank J. Caggiano will be ordained on Aug. 22 by Brooklyn Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio. The site for the special Mass, which will be attended by Cardinal Edward Egan, has not yet been determined, the Diocese of Brooklyn said.
The 153-year-old diocese, which covers Brooklyn and Queens, said the priests reflect the ethnic diversity of its 1.8 million Catholics who worship in 216 parishes.
Sansaricq, 71, is a native of Haiti; Cisneros, 60, was born in Cuba; and Caggiano, 47, is a Brooklyn native whose parents emigrated from Italy. Each of the bishop-elects speak two or more languages.
Sansaricq currently is pastor of St. Jerome's Church in Flatbush, Brooklyn, where he has served a large Creole-speaking population for 13 years. He also coordinates the diocese's Haitian Apostolate. Previously, he ministered in the Bahamas and was parochial vicar at Sacred Heart parish in Cambria Heights, Queens.
Cisneros is secretary for priestly life and the rector of Cathedral Residence of the Immaculate Conception in Douglaston, Queens. He has previously served at parishes in Brooklyn and Queens. He came to the United States through Operation Pedro Pan, a Catholic humanitarian effort that brought 14,000 unaccompanied minors to the U.S. from Cuba.
Caggiano currently serves as vicar for evangelization and pastoral life, spearheading DiMarzio's effort to promote the church's "new evangelization," which focuses on those who have drifted away from the church. He previously served in two Brooklyn parishes.
The three will join Auxiliary Bishop Ignatius A. Catanello, vicar for clergy, in assisting DiMarzio to serve the sacramental, spiritual and pastoral needs of the diocese.
The diocese last ordained auxiliary bishops 12 years ago.
The appointments also were announced in Washington by Archbishop Pietro Sambi, apostolic nuncio to the United States.
