U.S. may end tariff on Haitian garments
WASHINGTON, June 17 (UPI) -- Haiti's economy may be given a boost by a U.S. bill aimed at helping the garment industry compete with China by removing tariffs on knit and woven clothes.
The Los Angeles Times Saturday reported 20,000 jobs could be added within four months of Congress passing the
Haitian Hemispheric Opportunity Through Partnership Encouragement Act, or HOPE Act.
A combination of political strife and China's cornering of the garment producing market has led to 50 to 70 percent unemployment in Haiti and an 80 percent drop in garment manufacturing since the late 1980s.
Ianthe Jackson, a spokeswoman for the House Ways and Means Committee, said there was no date yet set for debate on the HOPE Act.
