Hopegivers International Sends First-Ever Medical Team to Haiti
Hopegivers International, widely known for its work helping thousands of orphaned, abandoned and at-risk children, is sending its first-ever medical team to Haiti this Thanksgiving, Hopegivers' Rob Brumberg announced today.
Haiti, the poorest nation in the western hemisphere, has traditionally struggled politically and economically. Several decades of exploitative leadership and a basic lack of infrastructure have also hampered its development.
Now there's another dark cloud on the horizon -- HIV/AIDS, according to Brumberg.
"You've got a population of just more than eight million, and nearly 300,000 people have HIV in Haiti now," he said. "It's definitely getting worse - it's spreading. Yet we firmly believe education and the Gospel are the best ways to combat this terrible disease."
Hopegivers meets the needs of 18 children in its "Hope Home" here, but HIV/AIDS and other infectious diseases are affecting the work. Two children at the home are HIV positive, and five suffer from tuberculosis.
Brumberg said the Hope Home's leader, Pastor Willio Joseph, and his wife Chrismene recently came across a young mother, "whose husband had left, and she was dying of AIDS. They saw her holding her 15-day-old baby. Their hearts were so touched by the mother's request to care for her child that they ended up taking the baby into their care that day."
Assisting with the HIV/AIDS problem is something that is on the hearts of the six-member Hopegivers team, which leaves Friday for Haiti to help with medical issues at the Hope Home, he said.
"We definitely have a big heart for the sick here at Hopegivers, and we want to see people come to know the Lord and realize that Jesus is the Great Healer and Comforter," Brumberg said.
"We're going to try and provide as many vaccines and other basic medical supplies as we can," Brumberg said. "Even things like band-aids, antiseptics, gauze and cold medicines can make a huge difference here."
According to Brumberg, this is just the beginning of the Hopegivers work in Haiti,"but it's totally dependent on God's blessing and the amount of support we receive for our children there."

Hopegivers International is a faith-based, not-for-profit humanitarian agency based in Columbus, Georgia. Founded in 1978, Hopegivers exists to bring "help for today and hope for eternity" by rescuing homeless children, widows, the sick and needy, regardless of caste or creed.

news Hopegivers is sending their first-ever medical team to Ouanaminthe, Haiti

Hopegivers International is sending their first-ever medical team to Ouanaminthe, Haiti Nov. 24th to Nov. 29th.
The team of three medical professionals, two writers and a teacher will fly from Atlanta to Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, and then take a bus to the Haiti border. The team plans on giving the 18 children at Pastor Willio Joseph's Hope Home various inoculations, basic medical treatment and thorough check-ups. They will also give check-ups and medicine to the 402 children at Pastor Willio's school.
Diseases such as HIV, tuberculosis, typhoid, malaria and hepatitis run rampant in Haiti and have helped lower the average life expectancy down to only about 50 years. With nearly half of Haiti's population of 8 million being 14-years-old or under, the island faces a potentially disastrous spread of infectious disease if no help is given.
The island's lack of healthcare infrastructure, and in some cases the lack of even the most basic medical supplies, means that treatable ailments such as the flu, lice, scabies and even common colds can take a serious toll. To address these urgent needs, Hopegivers' team will also bring basic necessities such as antibiotics, bandages, hygiene products and antiseptics.
Pastor Willio had his own recent bout with yellow fever, but is doing well after receiving several weeks of medicine and rest. Despite his recent health problems, he has still managed to move the child-rescue work forward. Since completion of the Home's new Hopegivers-sponsored well, he and his wife Chrismene now travel to medical clinics to give clean water, Bibles and encouragement to hospital patients.
Just last week, Chrismene met a young mother in a local clinic who was dying of HIV. Deserted by her husband, she cried, weakly clutching her 15-day-old baby. Chrismene's heart was deeply touched, and she brought Willio to pray over her.
Pastor Willio's heart was also touched, and the three decided that it would be best for Willio and Chrismene to care for the newborn at "Orphelinat Sur Le Rocher" (Creole for 'Orphanage on the Rock'). The child is now the second infant at the Hope Home, along with Willio and Chrismene's one-year-old daughter, Wildjena.
If you would like to send support or pray for the medical team, or would like to know more about the Haiti project, please call Robby at the office at 1-866-373-4673. If you would like to know more about the current situation in India or elsewhere, please call the office or e-mail us at info@hopegivers.org.
