Miami Housing Project Development: Police arrest two in Gang-rape of Haitian woman & torture of her son, up to 8 suspects still at large
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (WSVN) -- Police have arrested two teenagers and are searching for up to eight others who tortured and forced a South Florida woman and her son to engage in oral sex.
Police say the group of teenage boys burst into the woman's Dunbar Village apartment on June 18, brandishing pistols and a shotgun, and demanded money. The victim says when she informed them she did not have any money, the group tortured and gang-raped her for three hours. "They just told me give us the money. I said I don't have money. They told me open the door, get inside. If you yell, we will kill you and your son," she said. "Some of them have sex with me twice, some have sex with me three times, they beating me up and make me do those things over and over. The one who has the big gun, he put the gun inside of me."
The victim says following the gang-rape, the teens forced her to perform oral sex on her 12-year-old son. "I told them it doesn't matter; to save your life, try to do it," she said. "I know you love me and I love you."
After the torture and rape, the teens poured household chemicals into the eyes of the victim's son. He has since regained his sight, but he and his mother are undergoing psychological counseling.
The victim told investigators that she could not identify the suspects because they wore masks. "The one have a big gun in the front and two other with a shotgun and they come in front of me," she said. "They have something in their face. I couldn't even see their faces."
However, detectives retrieved DNA evidence from the crime scene and have linked two teens to the crime. Police have arrested 14-year-old Avian Lawson and 16-year-old Nathan Walker, but the father of one of the two insists his son is innocent. "My son has a good heart, I love my son," said Nathan Walker, Sr. "You know, I'm gon stick by my son. I can't believe he'll do something like that."
The victim emigrated to South Florida from Haiti and says that she could only afford an apartment in the violent Dunbar Village complex. Wachovia Bank has set up an account to help the victim find a safe place to live. If you would like to make a donation, visit any Wachovia branch office and make the check payable to St. Ann's Victim Assistance Fund.

news Police Arrest Third Teen In Gang-Rape Of Haitian Immigrant Mother

Police Arrest Third Teen In Gang-Rape Of Haitian Immigrant Mother, Son In WPB
UPDATED: 4:54 pm EDT July 12, 2007
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- A third teenager has been arrested in the gang rape and assault of a mother and her 12-year-old son in a West Palm Beach housing project.
Jakaris Taylor, 15, was arrested around 6:45 a.m. Thursday and is expected to make his first appearence in court Friday afternoon.
Ted White with the West Palm Beach Police Department said Taylor was linked to the crime scene by fingerprint evidence.
According to police reports, Taylor placed himself at the crime scene but denied being involved in the attack.
Two other teens accused in the case were arrested last week. Authorities said 14-year-old Avion Lawson and 16-year-old Nathan Walker are being charged as adults with armed sexual battery by multiple perpetrators, sexual performance by a child, armed home invasion and aggravated battery.
Police said the teens were among as many as 10 other youths who two weeks ago forced their way into a woman's Dunbar Village home, sexually assaulted her, beat her 12-year-old son and forced her at gunpoint to perform oral sex on the boy.
Investigators said they are still looking for up to seven other youths they believe participated in the attack.
A spokesman said the state attorney's office will be seeking a grand jury indictment for all defendants in the case to ensure they are charged as adults. Prosecutors said the teens could then face up to life in prison if convicted.
Individuals who would like to donate money to the victims can go to any Wachovia Bank and donate to the St. Ann’s Victim’s Assistance Fund. Donations will go directly to the mother and her son.

Residents To Voice Safety Concerns
West Palm Beach Mayor Lois Frankel and Police Chief Delsa Bush will attend a community meeting in Dunbar Village on Thursday to discuss safety concerns in the area.
Frankel said the 60-year-old housing project needs to be replaced with a neighborhood that will provide hope instead of crime.
Frankel, however, said that kind of change requires funding that is unavailable.
"Maybe it helps to highlight the need for the resources to be available to eliminate these public housing ghettos that breed these kind of conditions," Frankel said.
She said both the state and federal government have cut funding for these sorts of projects.

news State attorney guarantees adult sentences if teens are convicted of WPB gang rape

State attorney guarantees adult sentences if teens are convicted of WPB gang rape
6:16 PM EDT, July 10, 2007
Calling the Dunbar Village gang rape the most horrific and senseless act he has ever seen, State Attorney Barry Krischer said Tuesday he is referring two teens and anyone else arrested in the crime to a grand jury, guaranteeing adult sentences should they be convicted.
"It is to my mind the worst crime I've seen in 37 years in the business," Krischer said. "This is as low as you can go. As the elected state attorney, the strongest statement I can make about how awful this crime is, is to ensure they get adult sanctions."
So far, two teens ages 14 and 16 have been arrested with the June 18 rape of a woman in front of her 12-year-old son at a West Palm Beach public-housing complex that has stunned veteran investigators with its brutality and left residents unsettled.
West Palm Beach police are still investigating and are looking for as many as eight other suspects. The South Florida Sun-Sentinel is not naming the 14- and 16-year-old suspects because of their ages.
The victim, 35, told police 10 men participated in the attack, in which she was repeatedly beaten, raped and sodomized in her home. Her son also was beaten, then forced to have sex with his mother. The assailants also poured household liquids in the boy's eyes, according to police reports.
Both teens have appeared in Juvenile Court and are being held in secure detention pending action from the State Attorney's Office within 21 days of their arrests. Attorney Robert Gershman, who is representing the older teen, declined to comment Tuesday on the grand jury presentment. The Public Defender's Office, which is representing the 14-year-old boy, could not be reached for comment despite an attempt by phone.
Rather than a "direct file," in which prosecutors formally file charges in adult court against the teens, Krischer is instead taking their cases to a grand jury for an indictment. That ensures if they are indicted and then convicted, a judge cannot opt for a youthful offender sentence.
The charges - armed sexual battery by multiple perpetrators while masked, armed home invasion while masked, sexual performance by a child and aggravated battery - carry a maximum sentence of life in prison.
Krischer said that it doesn't seem likely that a judge would choose a youthful offender sentence after hearing the facts in this case, in which the suspects showed no compassion or respect for human beings.
According to police reports, the 16-year-old was arrested after his palm print was found inside the victim's home. He has denied knowing the woman or ever being inside her home. DNA of the 14-year-old boy was found inside the victim's home, police said.
West Palm Beach Housing Authority officials have said security improvements to Dunbar Village are coming soon, including surveillance cameras.
The case has rattled attorneys who have prosecuted hundreds of homicides and crimes against children, Krischer said. "Around here we keep shaking our heads," he said. "I hope to God nothing worse than this comes through this office." The West Palm Beach Police Department has helped set up a fund for the mother and son to relocate through the St. Ann's Victim Assistance Fund. Anyone wishing to help can visit any Wachovia Bank branch and donate to the fund.
