Construction Begins This Week on Savannah's Haitian Monument
After years of planning, a new monument is being erected in one of Savannah's squares.
The monument to honor the Haitians who fought for our city in the Siege of Savannah will be placed in Franklin Square.
Today city leaders and members of the Haitian American Historical Society gathered to kick off the construction period. They will break ground tomorrow to begin work on the monument.
Daniel Fils-Aime, a Haitian-American said, "That's a dream come true, it is a seven year project we've been working on and we have the support of the city and people of Savannah to make this a reality and it could not be better than that."
Once construction begins tomorrow, Franklin Square will be closed. The monument is scheduled to be finished by October 8.

Building of Haitian Monument begins downtown
Monday, Sep 10, 2007 - 07:03 PM
Plans are moving along for the Haitian monument in downtown Savannah.
City leaders and supporters of the project gathered in Franklin Square today for what was supposed to be the first day of construction. But they won't break ground until tomorrow.
The square will be closed to the public during construction. Fifty thousand city tax dollars will help pay for the monument. It should be in place by October 8th.
The statue will celebrate the 500 Haitian troops that supported the Americans and French against the British in 1779.
