Replacing Joseph Nemours Pierre-Louis proved to be a major headache for the parliament. In spite of the constitutional prescription that called for the choice of the oldest judge of the Tribunal de Cassation, a modest candidate for presidency, Franck Sylvain, was elected to become provisional president on February 7, 1957.
