Emergency: Floods and landslides in North West, Nippes and the Grand Anse, Haiti

Details of the Emergency:
A tropical depression provoked heavy rainfalls resulting in landslides and floods in the Departments of North West, Nippes and Grand Anse.
In the Department of Grand Anse, the bad weather particularly affected the coastal area with severe flooding as well as landslides. The communes of Jeremie, Bonbon and Abricots, with a total population concerned of about 170'000 people, were amongst the hardest hit. In Jeremie, 3 persons were reported dead and 3 disappeared. Other disaster's impact reported for the 3 communes are: 1790 distressed families, 238 destroyed houses, 515 damaged houses and 452 people living in shelter. Lost cattle amounts to 200. 50% of the crop was affected, representing 300 ha.
Regarding the infrastructure, the main road between Bonbon and Anse du Clerc was destroyed and the road between Anse du Clerc and Abricot is only accessible to pedestrians. The two water catchments and the piping systems supplying Bonbon with potable water were destroyed. The health center in Bonbon was flooded and all medicines supplies gone.
PURPOSE OF RESPONSE:
- To provide relief assistance in the form of medicines, health and hygienic kits and water tablets in order to avoid epidemics. Medicine will include drugs against diarrhoea, skin diseases, typhoid and malaria, pain relieves, antibiotics.
- To provide clean water supply through technical assistance and water purification tablets
- To provide access to villages through tools and technical assistance.
BENEFICIARIES INFORMATION AND LOCATION OF RESPONSE Two Communes in the Department of the Grand Anse totalling 68'000 people: Bonbon (21.000 people) and Abricot, including Anse du Clerc (47.000 people). All affected areas are located in remote zones in the North West Coast of the Department.
LWF is responding in the affected areas of Bonbon and Abricots (including Anse du Clerc) through its local partner FNGA, and might prepare an appeal proposal. LWF is coordinating with the Government and OCHA and other potential actors.
IMPLEMENTATION PERIOD: DECEMBER 4TH, 2006 - MARCH 4TH, 2007
TOTAL BUDGET: US$ 50,000

ACTION
The ACT Co-ordinating Office has approved the use of US$ 50,000 towards the budget from its Rapid Response Fund. Should there be an appeal for this emergency, the RRF payment will be considered as an advance.
