I'm teaching a unit on the country of Haiti this summer to my children at church during a week long day camp that we do each year. I'm having some problems finding information to use in my teaching.

We'll be eating native Haitian foods, doing crafts, playing the games of Haiti and I'd like to teach them in Haitian Creole the phrase "Jesus is King".

I'm having a very hard time finding the translation and pronunciation. I'm simply awful at languages, and I could easily change the unit to another country but I KNOW with my whole heart we're to learn about Haiti.

Could someone please help me?

Any suggestions on native crafts for children would also be greatly appreciated. I don't like to give the kids an "American view" but an honest view and flavor of the country we learn about so that they develop a love for that country. Thank you

Some day I'll get to Haiti, I've planned a trip 3 times but each time something major has happened and prevented me. I will get there. I talk about it so much that my kids at church even asked if we could study Haiti this year. LOL

Wow, where have you been all this time? You should do a phonetic course for those of us interested in Creole registered here. I'm sure you've helped this lady a lot as well as the other info provided on the site.

I've tried and know a "few" little phrases, however; find a lack of patience when it comes to other members helping with the language.

As for this lady and her project, it's also nice to see education about an often forgotten nation (especially for youth). You really must try to go once travel is possible for you.

I actually got two wonderful ideas from this little exercise. I need to get them patented!

As for a "course", that takes a lot of formalities... How about a forum? I think Haitiwebs has the platform ready for that here.

I would love to see a public forum in the language areas specifically. Moreover, I've been lamenting for a public forum for open chat a period of time now.

I know it must be an immense amount of work and problems with the net, however; what a great feature and means of communication.

As per the "ideas" you have brewing, no doubt I'm interested in hearing about them. I will look forward to further information in regards to this matter. Cheers!

I have a great idea for your class--as part of it raise money for pills to deworm children in Haiti. Our school is doing it right now- 2 cents can buy a pill. We are working through Aaron Jackson's organization called planting peace. See plantingpeace.org

I did a visual with our kids at school. After lunch i asked them what was in their tummies and then i put 15 cooked spaghetti noodles in a bag and said that was what was in children's stomach in Haiti.

I made little containers out of cheap tupperware and called it the spare change campaign--in only 2 weeks we gathered $400.00 worth of change to buy pills!!

It is great to be able to help while learning about another culture--

I really loved your activity and improvising with realistic materials "the noodles" to gently yet visualy impact image to educate and enlighten your students.

It's important these days to share dynamic teaching materials of the like, as text book teaching loses its ground. We have to intertwine them these days I think.

However; there's nothing more refreshing than seeing students intrigued and interested by exciting choices of resources. Furthermore; it's about learning ...as you said ...about our cultures and differences in a rewarding way.

Your fundraising results and information for the assistance to your goal show greatness. As well it can be done simply and we don't have to be rich to make a dent!
