Sort of like a new beginning type thing.

Its not that its never been done before. A couple of years ago i found out that the haitian flags has gone through many changes.

Personally, I never liked the current flag because of the two cannons that appear on the middle emblem. Sure its a symbol of out "toughness" but in modern terms that would be like having a darn tank on your flag and i'm not sure thats an image we wanna the world to see us in.

Thoughts?

i would not support any further change of the haitian flag.

i would support it. kind of like south africa having a new flag and a new beginning. we need to change our whole mentality with respect to our beloved country. why not start with the flag?

black people look better in bright colors anyway. we have enough recknown haitian artists who could draw up something better in my opinion.

I think the colors should stay, but I agree, the emblem should go. Those 2 cannons show us as belligerent or in the past. Perhaps a different emblem to show the attractive tourist side... something with a palm tree and peace... a nice sandy beach

I love our flag the way it is. We might need a new beginning but we can't forget our history.

I'm not that ease with english but let me give it a try :

we must learn to identify to our flag it's part of our identity and i wouldn't change it no matter what. Same for our national hymn and the name of our country Haiti! What we need is an evolution in our mentality, not a change in our identity!! Too many before us have want to undo the histoy but despite all the negativeness ; for me even when we'll be a prosper country, our difficult debut as a nation will always remain as part of us.

Changing the flag is NOT forgetting our history. BESIDES, its been changed before. The Flag that you see now is NOT the original flag

But here's a tidbit of knowledge that was dropped on me when a was little

When they came up with the first haitian flag (back in 1803/04) they simply took out the white out the french flag and sew up the remainder BLUE/RED and the flag's significance was supposed to be "Liberte ou la mort". The removal of the white third of the flag meant the expulsion of the white french colonists from the country.

But later Dessalines went back and changed the flag to BLACK/RED. THough in the public he maintained that the colors still meant "Liberte ou la mort", the real significance behind the BLACK/RED and ESPECIALLY the positionning of the BLACK part of the flag (BLACK on the side of the pole while the RED was on the end hanging onto the black stripe) represented the blacks and red representing the mullatos of the country with the blacks in control of the nation (thus holding the pole).

Later when Petion (a mullato himself) took control he kept the BLACK/RED flag but he switched the positions having the red stripe holding to the pole (i.e. being in control) making it RED/BLACKsincehe supported the mulattos when tensions arose between blacks and mulattoes in the country.

I do not know how much truth there is to this story but I'm just telling it as it was told to me.

Speak for yourself on that one. I hate bright things period. I swear my entire closet is grey, black, brown and dark green
