Creole/English

Hi!
I will be traveling to Haiti in October '08 on a mission trip and would like to learn basic Creole.
Wondering what resources I would benefit most from?
Also, what's the best way to go about getting Creole/English speaking pen-pals?
Thanks!

Not sure about a pen pal but a guy at work can surprisingly function in Kreyol after buying books and Audio of Haitian Kreyol online.
Also If you study french at the same time you study Kreyol it might make both of them easier. Plus you could be killing 2 birds with one stone.
Some Kreyol words and English derived, here's one funny english-derived word:
mayas: means stinky feet in kreyol
To get the origin of this word add another "s" and put a space between the "my" to the other word.
Have fun learning Kreyol!

Learning Creole

Hi. I use to teach English as A Second Language. One of the books that I found to be extremely help full was "The Oxford Picture Dictionary". For the most part, Creole translates verbatim to english. So if you learn the vocabulary you will be able to plug and play enough that you can be understood. Step 1 learn the vocabulary. Step 2 create simple english phases and plug the creole vocabulary words in place. Step 3 practice using those phrases accordingly. There is also a workbook that can assist you.
Good Luck to you. Feel free to send me a message if I can be of any further assistance.
