ZURICH, Switzerland (CMC) - Cuba displaced Jamaica as No 2 and the Bahamas surged into an unprecedented top-10 spot in the latest Caribbean Football Union (CFU) rankings released yesterday.
Boosted by their results in Group E qualifying of the Digicel Caribbean Cup in Cuba earlier this month, Bahamas vaulted a world-best 55 places during the month to be 138th on the FIFA list, and Cuba climbed 31 places to be 69th.
These huge adjustments sent the Bahamas into the CFU's Top-10 at No 9, while Cuba became Trinidad and Tobago's nearest challengers at the top of the regional ratings as Jamaica's Reggae Boyz slid to No 3.
Trinidad and Tobago jumped five places up FIFA's list to No 56 and remain a clear No 1 in the CFU ahead of the Cubans, who ran past Turks and Caicos Islands (6-0), Bahamas (6-0) and the Cayman Islands (7-0) while hitting 19 unanswered goals in the series.
The Bahamas won over Cayman (3-1) and Turks & Caicos (3-2) in their other matches to qualify for the Digicel Cup's second round as Group E runners-up, while gaining enormous ground in the rankings. They jumped from 20th to No 9 in the CFU.
Turks and Caicos also benefited from their Group E outing. After beating Cayman Islands (2-0) for a first ever win at this level, they enjoyed 27-place jump on FIFA's list that moved them from 23rd to 15th in the CFU.
