Yes , it is sad if you are not able to identify with your native haitian in their language. It is important for all parents to make sure they introduce their culture to their offsprings? understanding your culture makes you a complete person. You will love yourself more!!! I, personally despite my 27yrs years in this country. I still I love haiti despite the chaos, infact 10 years ago my mom retired there after 32 years in this country hw5

This should teach all of us a lesson. It is important not only to introduce our "offsprings" to the Haitian culture, but also to teach them the 2 languages spoken in Haiti. It might be a good idea to speak both French and Creole (or either or) with the children at home. They will speak English anyway since they are growing up in an English speaking country.

I agree with all of you. I'm 17 years old and lived in america my whole life. I see my cousins like once a month and they all speak Creole. Its weird cause I feel left out. I don't really know anything about Haiti and I wish I knew some Haitians that were my age. Maybe one day my parents will teach me to speak Creole. I am currently supposed to write an article in my news paper at school about whats happening in Haiti but I have very little information. If you can help please e-mail me. I would love to see what the Haitian community thinks.

Growing up in America

First of all I'm PR, For those people who laugh at you big hw6 to them. They should help and teach you how to speak your language and not make fun of it, that would only make you not to want to be around them and that's not what you want. Go an attend many Haitian funtions That would help you want to learn more. In addition you are not different, For example, Iwas born and raised in NYC and one day I decided to move to FL. and people use to tell me the same thing about how I spoke with this NY accent moreover, my parent are from PR, Iwas born here, and I don't speak spanish that well but that does not make me diffferent. It's not about where you from It's where you at! Just to say my wife is and daughter is haitian and the joy of my life. At times when we visit her family, they speak haitian all the time but I never feel that I'm left out, If I want to know what there talking about I just ask. And yes ! they do laugh at me hw3 But they teach me as well. Just to add more, the reason why some people only speak there language is that (maybe) they don't know enough english. I hope this made you feel better and it's OK not to know, if you want to learn just take some time doing so, don't worry about the accent just say I was raised here and if that's a problem to you then that's to bad. hw3 Peace

Welcome aboard everybody !
I believe that all of you guys and gals are doing just fine .You can learn about Haitian culture in English, Spanish or whatever language of the country fate has chosen you to be born in . It may be a bit awkward at times to hang around Haitians if they can only speak French or Creole while living in a foreign country .
However, you are not really missing out on anything if you were not born and raised there .You have no remembrance of specific details that would tie you to a particular way of life during childhood and adolescence .
The English language can teach a lot about Haitian culture . It has a vast litterature available to those who are interested in knowing the minute details of Haitian culture . You need not speak creole to learn and understand about Haitian culture .
The only problem that I see is that you may need a clear understanding of what is relevant haitian culture on the one hand and political propaganda - good or bad - on the other hand . .This phenomenon , you will find it in any language that pretends to "know " the values of Haitian culture .That includes French and Creole .
Welcome aboard . And , do not hesitate to ask the questions that are important to you . We'd like you to share your thoughts with us .
