Today, Thanksgiving Day, as so many around America will indulge in gastronomic excesses, we may need to remember that around the world, 1 out of 5 of our fellow humans will go to bed hungry. This can be confirmed by looking at the last report of FAO, a United Nations agency dedicated to the study and remedial of hunger and poverty.
Most of these people striken by chronic malnourishment live in Asia and Africa. However, a significant minority of them are residents and citizens of the First World, and live right up our street, right in our back yard.
In 1996, world leaders at a UN summit set 2015 as the deadline to reduce the rate of hunger by 50%. This is not going to happen, despite overall worldwide prosperity, improved technology, and relative peace time. In fact, the scourge has gotten worse.
Tomorrow when you wake-up, look at the garbages of America, they would feed an entire sub-continent. Tonight, before you go to bed satiated, think that out of each 100 people in the world, 20 children, adults, and elderly will not fall asleep because of cramps in their stomach...
