There are parties and parties. Last night's Insomnia (the name of the
party), at MO2BS, in Chamaguas, has been the mother party at this soca
festival (call it carnaval) in Port of Spain, so far.
Ten thousand people danced, screamed, jumped, hugged, whined, kissed, and
finally got breakfast. They also got wet to the bones by powerful hoses
that failed to extinct their commitment of jumping-up until the last man
(or woman) dies. This forced shower was part of the spectacle.
The party started at midnight and ended at 10:00 a.m. Dress code: the
lesser the better.
Machel Montano, the 30 year-old reigning king of soca land (born on Nov
24, 1974), came to stage at 6:00 a.m. He triggered a folly or histerical
proportion. For two hours, he electrified not only the crowd, but the
trees and the billboards.
His numbers feature a Japanese woman on her head and a guy flying above
the tree in a propulser, among others. Machel Montano is a riot.
Before Machel, Destra came on for a song or two. Oh! my goodness!
