Last night, Charlize Theron won the Oscar in the Best Actress category
(best performance by a female in a leading role) for her interpretation of
a serial killer in Monster.
That prize was only overdue. Even her nomination was overdue. I remember
her in The Cider House Rule, playing Tobey McGuire?s girl-friend. That was
in 1999. She gave a over the top performance, snubbed by the Academy,
while Michael Caine won an Award for the same movie.
This year?s Award is likely to bring Chalize, a 28-year old South African
native, to the #1 female spot in Hollywood. It is doubtful that she will
disappear from the Oscar list as Gwyneth Paltrow did after her 1999 grand
prize, for Shakespeare in Love. Charlize has been in 22 major productions
over the last eight years. Who did better?
Another overdue Oscars went to Sean Penn (Best Actor) and Renee Zellweger
(Best Supporting Actress). Tim Robbins ran away with the Best Supporting
Actor (Alec Baldwin must not be happy about it).
Oscarfest 2004 saw The Return of the King, the last installment of the
Lord of the Ring trilogy, collect eleven statuettes for eleven
nominations: record tying with Ben Hur and Titanic. The Return of the
King is also the fourth movie to nab all the Awards it was nominated for.
Billy Crystal was back, 20-lb heavier, but in super form. The dance
numbers were out. The show was still 3 and ½ hour-long. And, despite all
fears, there was no ?wardrobe malfunction?.
