Haiti's interim government has filed a lawsuit in the US against the exiled President Jean-Bertrand Aristide.
It alleges that Mr Aristide and eight other defendants stole tens of millions of dollars from the Haitian treasury and state-owned telephone firm Teleco.
The case was filed at a federal court in Miami because some of the money was allegedly transferred to the US.
Lawyers for Mr Aristide - who was ousted in February 2004 - have always denied doing anything wrong.
More than 18 months after Mr Aristide was forced from power, Haiti remains mired in violence and political unrest.
The situation is especially bad in the capital, Port-au-Prince, where supporters and opponents of the exiled president regularly fight bloody battles. Haiti - one of the poorest countries in the world - is due to hold elections by the end of the year, though a date has not yet been set.
