Caribbean Nationals To Join Immigrant Rights Protest Against CNN
Hardbeatnews, NEW YORK, N.Y.,
Friday July 14, 2006: Officials of the Haitian Coalition To Support The Struggle In Haiti and the Guyanese-American Workers United are among pro-immigration advocates set to join a protest action outside CNN?s New York studios tomorrow.
The July 14th protest, according to advocates, is in response to CNN anchor Lou Dobbs? ?racist immigrant bashing.?
Yesterday, Chuck Mohan of GAWU, who has been active in many immigrant rights demonstrations, told HBN, Dobb?s ?portrayal of immigrants leaves a lot to be desired and the immigrant communities must unite against this racist reporter and CNN.? The protest action is set for 4:30 p.m. at 59th St. & Columbus Circle in Manhattan, home of the ?Lou Dobbs Tonight.?
The rally is being organized by the May 1 NYC Immigrant Rights Coalition, a group of immigration advocacy groups like Mohan?s.
In a statement, the group said, ?No media personality has done more to generate an anti-immigrant climate than CNN?s Lou Dobbs. Anyone tuning into to Dobb?s primetime nightly racist sermon will be told that undocumented workers are responsible for the ?war on the middle class,? crime, terrorism, and turning Spanish into the official language of the U.S.
?On Friday, July 14 we call upon all who can to demonstrate against racism immigrant bashing. Join trade unionist, students, antiwar activist, and immigrants on Friday and together, let?s start the process of stopping the racist tide and turn it back.?
Dobb?s has in recent months, emerged as the ?spokesperson? for the anti-immigration movement, using his show to criticize those in favor of earned legalization for undocumented, including President Bush. He calls the plan ?amnesty? for ?illegal aliens,? and has largely espoused the views of groups like the Minute Men, slamming the White House for failing to do more to secure the country?s borders.
CNN?s public affairs department could not be reached for comment on the planned protest at press time last night. ? Hardbeatnews.com
