HAITIAN GIRL WITH 16 POUND TUMOR-LIKE GROWTH ON HER FACE TO UNDERGO FOURTH AND FINAL SURGERY
International Kids Fund raises money for the procedure
MIAMI (September 28, 2006) ? Marlie Casseus, the Haitian girl that arrived in Miami a year ago with a 16 pound tumor-like growth on her face, will undergo surgery on October 5th for the fourth and final time at Holtz Children?s Hospital on the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Medical Center.
During this last surgery, the medical team led by Jesús Gómez D.D.S., a maxillofacial surgeon from the University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine, will reconstruct Marlie?s lower face, reestablishing her jawbone and reducing the abnormal opening of her mouth allowing her to close it, swallow and speak.
?This operation will give Marlie a more structured face and will allow her to regain control of the normal functions of her mouth and jaw,? explained Dr. Gómez. The medical team will use a metal plate that can be molded, allowing them to rebuild the features of the girl?s lower face. This is expected to be Marlie?s last surgery in the near future. Dr. Gómez will keep monitoring her status to determine the next steps.
The International Kids Fund (IKF), the non-profit organization sponsoring her medical treatment continues to raise funds to help her. ?This has been a long journey for Marlie, but since arriving in Miami a year ago her life has taken a very positive turn. Thanks to the help of the community and people from around the world, Marlie is a happy girl desiring to live a normal and productive life. We are once again asking for your contributions to help us complete the mission,? stated María Luisa Chea, IKF director.
Last August Marlie returned to Haiti to visit her family, which was greatly impressed by the progress she has made, not only physically but emotionally. ?My daughter?s agony is almost over. After every operation she looks in the mirror, becomes excited and waves her hands to the sky thanking God. I will always be infinitely thankful to all those who helped us get to this point,? said Maleine Antoine while hugging her daughter.
Marlie?s growth was brought about by a rare genetic condition named polyostotic fibrous dysplasia, which is characterized by uneven growth, pain, brittleness and deformity of the affected bones. The growth first became evident six years ago and overcame Marlie?s nose and mouth, rendering her unable to eat, breathe or speak on her own. Only her eyes, nostrils and a tooth could be recognized from her severely swollen face. Since December 2005, the adolescent, with the help of IKF and donations from all over the U.S. and around the world, has undergone various surgeries to remove the tumor-like growth and reconstruct her face.
IKF?s fund raising campaign for Marlie?s fourth and last operation took place today during a news conference at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Medical Center. Present were: Marlie and her mother, Dr. Gómez and Maria Luisa Chea.
People interested in making a tax-deductible donation to IKF can mail their check or money order to:

Post Teen Who Had Growth On Face Appears In Miami

Doctors Remove 16-Pound Growth From Teen's Face
Friday , September 29, 2006
MIAMI ? A Haitian teen who once hid her grossly distorted face smiled and danced Thursday, a sign of how far she has come since doctors removed a 16-pound tumor-like growth.
When Marlie Casseus arrived in Miami in December, the growth had stretched her facial features so far apart that only her eyes, nostrils and a single tooth were recognizable.
Though her lower lip now hangs open, causing her to drool slightly, the 15-year-old smiled broadly and shimmied at reporters and television cameras. Without music, she stood on her own, held up her arms and shook them and her hips back and forth.
Once she recovers from another surgery next month, Marlie will learn to swallow and speak again.
"Marlie is very happy now. She is happy to see the face now," Maleine Antoine, the teen's mother, said in English, which she has learned since coming to Florida with her daughter.
Surgeons removed the massive growth, narrowed the separation between her eyes and lips and rebuilt the interior of her nose and jaw in three surgeries in the past year at Holtz Children's Hospital.
A reconstructive surgery to reshape a titanium plate previously implanted in her jaw, scheduled Oct. 5, will be her last for now, said Dr. Jesus Gomez, a maxillofacial surgeon at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.
"In the future she's going to look like a normal person," Gomez said.
The series of surgeries have progressively flattened Marlie's cheeks, centered her eyes and defined her nose. Her face is still elongated and slightly asymmetrical, and Gomez said she will likely need additional cosmetic surgeries once she stops growing.
Marlie suffers from a rare form of polyostotic fibrous dysplasia, a nonhereditary, genetic disease that causes bone to swell and become jelly-like. The growth began about six years ago, and eventually prevented Marlie from eating, breathing or speaking on her own. Doctors in Haiti gave her no hope to live, Antoine said.
The teen, who wore a Disney Cinderella T-shirt and ribbons in the braids in her hair Thursday, breathes on her own but cannot speak because of a tube implanted in her windpipe for surgery. She also still has a feeding tube.
Doctors will continue to monitor her condition, but the lesion that deformed her face is not expected to grow back once she completes puberty, Gomez said.
The hospital's International Kids Fund, which seeks to provide medical care for needy children from around the world, is asking for donations to continue Marlie's care. The Haitian nonprofit Good Samaritan for a Better Life helped bring the teen to the United States.

Haitian girl with tumor undergoes fourth operation
BY ELINOR J. BRECHER
ebrecher@MiamiHerald.com
Marlie Casseus, the 14-year-old Haitian girl who had her first operation last December to remove a 16-pound facial tumor, underwent her fourth reconstructive operation Thursday at Holtz Children's Hospital at University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Medical Center.
During nearly six hours of surgery, maxillofacial surgeon Jesus Gomez and his team replaced a temporary metal plate with a titanium jaw, and constructed lips.
Marlie was in critical but stable condition in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit Thursday evening.
The tumor had nearly blinded and choked Marlie, who was brought to Miami by the International Kids Fund, part of the Jackson Memorial Foundation.
So far, $300,000 has been raised for Marlie's care, which could exceed $500,000. For information about making a tax-deductible donation, call 1-877-IKF-KIDS.
