Jamaica fails to qualify for CONCACAF Gold Cup

Jamaica?s national senior footballers are still licking their wounds after being dethroned of the CFU Digicel Cup title in the first round of the qualifying series.

After seeing their surprise conqueror of Wednesday St. Vincent and the Grenadines drub St. Lucia 8-nil in the penultimate game of Group D, the Jamaicans who needed to defeat the unbeaten Haiti side by three goals to progress to the second round could only manage a 2-nil win over the Group winners.

Once again the Reggae Boyz were sluggish, lethargic and a long way from vibrant in the second half, and were unable to find another goal which would secure their advancement to the disappointment of interim coach Carl Brown.

In the end the 2-1 loss to SVG prevented the Jamaicans from advancing on the head to head result after losing out to Haiti on goal difference as both

teams ended on six points.

So for the first time since 2002 Jamaica the three time Caribbean champions will not be able to qualify for the CONCACAF Gold Cup.

The Jamaicans will now turn their attention to Sunday?s friendly against Canada and the November encounter against Peru.

This will bring an end to the interim tenure of coach Brown.

Meanwhile the Dominican Republic became the 12th and last qualifier for the second round after a comfortable 6-1 win over host US Virgin Islands in the final Group C game at the Lionel Roberts Stadium.

Dominican Republic finished second behind Bermuda.

Antigua & Barbuda, Barbados, Suriname, Guyana, Cuba, Bahamas, Guadeloupe and Martinique are the other teams through to the final round during October and Novembe
