Soul of Haiti: music and dance concert onstage Friday at Montclair Art Museum (MAM)
?Voodoo and Creole: The Soul of Haiti? will be presented on Friday, Nov. 10, at 8 p.m., at the Montclair Art Museum, 3 South Mountain Ave., as the second concert in the ?World Music? series.
The event brings talented Haitian performers to the Leir Hall stage to explore traditions of Haitan folk culture, one of the most vibrant in the Americas. The evening will feature vocalist and folklorist Manze Dayila and the Creole Rainbow dance group, along with commentary by Dayila.
Dayila, who has been described as the ?Empress of Haitian Roots Music,? was born and raised in Haiti. A Vodouisant (practitioner of Voodoo), she is an engaging, earthly singer, an accomplished dancer and a recognized authority on Haitian folklore and music. Her credits range from performances in the New York City subways, to singing backup with the Rolling Stones, to appearing in clubs and Haitian festivals around the world.
Also appearing in the concert will be Creole Rainbow, a traditional and colorful Haitian dance group. For the finale number, Dayila will join Creole Rainbow in a special presentation of music, dance and costumes from the Guede celebration, a Voodoo holiday which occurs in early November.
The series is created and produced by Eagle Rock International, a Montclair-based concert company.. The con-cert is sponsored by CSA Audio Designs of Upper Montclair. On days of the concerts, the Museum?s galleries will remain open until 8 p.m.
Tickets are $20 for museum member adults; $25 for non-member adults; and $10 for museum member children; $15 for non-member children. Tickets are available in advance by calling the Museum Store at 973-746-5555; ext. 237, or at the door.
