Football/Soccer - Haiti to play in Caribbean Futsal qualifying Tournament in February 2008
Guyana to host Caribbean Futsal qualifying tournament
21.12.07 - Guyana was announced, this week, as the host for the Caribbean qualifying tournament to 2008 CONCACAF Futsal Championship.
Five teams (Haiti, Puerto Rico, Sint-Maarten, Surinam, Trinidad & Tobago) and the host will be divided into two groups of three for the CFU (Caribbean Football Union) Tournament that will be held in February of next year with the dates and venue to be announced in due course.
The Caribbean Tournament will progress two teams to the CONCACAF Futsal Championship at the Domo Polideportivo in Guatemala City, Guatemala next year.
Joining the two Caribbean qualifiers and the host, will be Costa Rica, Cuba, Mexico, Panama and USA in the CONCACAF Futsal Championship (Dates TBD), where three teams will qualify to the FIFA Futsal World Cup Brazil 2008.
CONCACAF have hosted three Futsal qualifiers for the FIFA Tournaments in 1996, 2000, 2004. Six teams participated in 1996 CONCACAF event in Guatemala that was won by the USA and also qualified Cuba to the FIFA competition in Spain 1996.
In 2000, eight squads took part in the Confederation competition in Costa Rica, which was won by the host. Cuba once again took second as both teams progressed to the FIFA Futsal World Cup in Guatemala.
Four years later, the eight-team CONCACAF Futsal Championship was again held in Costa Rica, where the USA and Cuba claimed first and second places, respectively.
