Wyclef JeanWyclef Jean, one third of the Grammy award winning group The Fugees, recently revealed that he has accepted the role of roving ambassador for his homeland of Haiti.
As SOHH previously reported, Jean was appointed roving ambassador by Haitian President Rene Preval to promote the image of the impoverished nation.
"I thank President Preval and it's an honor for me to have the opportunity to serve my country as a roving ambassador," Jean told The Caribbean Media Corporation (CMC) via telephone. "I will continue to do the best I can to help change the difficult reality of Haiti, that country that I carry in my heart. It's encouraging to see your country recognize your efforts and dedication."
Preval, who was joined by Jean on a recent trip to Jamaica, referred to the Grammy winning rapper as a "huge asset for the country." Jean, who moved to America when he was nine, has long been active in support of his native country and regularly wears the Haitian flag on his clothing at public events.
He also created the foundation, Yele Haiti, to provide aid and assistance to his birthplace.
During the interview, Jean also divulged that he will be performing with Shakira at the upcoming Grammy Awards. The duo will perform their smash single, "Hips Don't Lie", which scored a nomination for "Best Pop Collaboration."
The 49th annual Grammy Awards will air February 11 on CBS.
