news Glover Defends Venezuelan Film Location

LATEST: DANNY GLOVER has defended the decision to film his movie about a Haitian freedom fighter in Venezuela instead of in the troubled nation itself. Glover has been granted $18 million (GBP9 million) by Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez to film TOUSSAINT - the biopic of 18th century Haitian activist Toussaint L'Ouverture - in the South American country, which has caused concern in both nations. Haitian President Rene Preval tells the New York Daily News, "The entire world should be proud of our patrimony. We had the first successful revolt against slavery in this hemisphere. It's our contribution to humanity.
If Danny Glover can bring it to the screen, we will be happy. But I hope he will shoot it here." Famous Haitian Wyclef Jean adds, "We want it shot in Haiti. If a portion of the movie is not shot in Haiti. I would definitely feel disappointed." Some Venezuelans are also unhappy that the government is putting such a large sum into the movie. Director Jose Novoa says, "Eighteen million could fund five years of local cinema in Venezuela. And the film's not even about Venezuela." However, Glover insists it would be impossible to shoot the film in Haiti, which has been besieged by instability and violence since the 1980s. He says, "You can't film in Haiti. It doesn't have the infrastructure, unfortunately."

I can get over it, if it's not filmed in Haiti but what's important is that the story is told the way it happens.
I'll be really mad if this story is not told right.

Media

I agree that it's great that at least the history will be represented, hopefully, as accurately as any have been through the screen.
It would be truly an IDEAL in many of the people's/nation's respects. As well, an asset financially, morally and do so much justice to Haiti if it could be shot there. However, how many times have we watched incredible, eye-opening, inspiring & or heartrendering
re-enactments of greatness that have been shot off location.
For certain, I think the main thing is that it's been approved, funded, and is underway with recognizable talent. Furthermore, and more essential is that it makes the nation proud regardless of soil. That the story is told WELL! The profits will follow...what do you think?
There is still room for changes and cinematography anyhow. This is the gossip stage. No set is in action yet!

About the movie

The only thing I can say here... we don't know how this movie going to represent
and also we have a lot of enemies in the world and they might want to put an end to this movie
I don't think they want the world to know the biggest history in the world to be reveal
I mean we have a great history in our hands in the world...
This is the most important individual History in the world in Black History .....
it needs to be done correctly, truly and respectfully to our native history ... because the world is going to see it and will know now who we are... ya need to think about this for real and make no mistake I'm saying this because of they we are right now in the society.
because most COUNTRY/PEOPLE don't even know if there's a country called HAITI, I sometime says that I'm from (HAITI), some people was like, what country is that where is it ? and I have to tell them about the country... so if this movie going to be done it should done with respect to us not for RACIAL DISCRIMINATION LIKE CNN AND FOX NEWS WHEN THEY SHOWING SOMETHINGS ABOUT THE COUNTRY (HAITI) SHOWING ONLY THE BAD PLACES AND PUT US ON THE NEWS ONLY WHEN THE PEOPLE IS FIGHTING EACH OTHER...
I'll say fuck this movie!... ya think these Haitians American and don't want people to know that they Haitian would want to do something good for us after all the year that went by....pleaseeeee
I'M HURT A LOT ...innocent people are dying Haiti every day
they don't shit about it... and plus most of them black people actors, rappers, celebrities in America are Haitian.. I said that because of our great History. We Haitians helped America gain their independence and we also was in control many part of this country. you think they want the world to know that.. please.... I used read more about it at this website they took it off the air this one(
1.
A LOOK AT HAITIAN HISTORY FROM A HAITIAN PERSPECTIVE
... began to help its neighbors in South America to gain liberty as well. ... the flag of the countries that he will gain independence for with Haitian help. ...Haitian helped the Americans and in control part of the country, learn more from this website...

Haitians please... it's time to stand up and be together, if someone do something bad to you don't fight please just talk it over and you will see how that going to change HAITI and God will bless the country and people will know how great and wonderful we are and know about us later... think of that... where else you want to be but HAITI... Haiti is freedom if ya don't know.. I love it and I'm going to open Many businesses over there. I know most of you don't want to be here.. but we have to get together first for us to change. don't be a shame of saying, I AM HAITIAN AND I"M PROUD.. the country is that way because you not say you are Haitian and you not proud... because you scared you might or your name may be scratch off Hollywood.. but think of it we Haitians can have you has our Hollywood...... thank you Haitians ya the best I love ya always, i don't care if ya dirty, bad, act funny, dress funny or ugly... and for that i will not say that I'm not Haitian or want people to know that I'm not Haitian.. ya my peeps and i will love anyways... and all ya need to do the same, we like that because we are all over the world, but if we were in the same country we would not think that way or even not say that we are not Haitian or a shame of saying it.. thank u guys and be real and one more thing about this movie, how much money you think we going to get for Haiti problems...

I'm not Haitian yet I see 2 sides to this argument. Those who fear the story will be distorted..and yes it will to some degree. As well, those who want their history told and be recognized for it and as the country they are now.
Yes, the ignorance of where the country is and what it goes through is formidable. However, I have found many Haitians themsleves guilty of ridding/ casting thmeselves of their own country. Many people from EVERYWHERE are easily pointed fingers at for this outcome.
I think the main point here is that a HISTORY has a chance at being told. Many people will be made aware of this history. It's really always still up to the integrity of viewers interested in how much they know and how much they will investigate for themselves.
At least this film will create an opportunity to taste something and learn as opposed to no exposure or worse how Haiti is/and if portrayed today. (CNN and news as fore-mentioned).
Give it a chance to open a lot of eyes!

Come to think of it, I don't like Glover. He is one of those punks SOB who was asking for an embargo on Haiti. It does not matter to me where they would do this movie. I simply would have loved to see it produced by Mel Gibson. This guy is very much into details. After having watched his Apocalypto, the first part made me feel it was like our Cacique Henri time. And Braveheart was very epic, similar to what a movie on Toussaint should be.
In most movies, Glover's role was one of an idiot, a bekeke, and he does look like one. So one more reason for him to say away from my Toussaint.

Anyone Who Can do the Film Justice

I don't care who produces and/or directs the movie. Point still is to me, I hope it will be done justice and EVERYONE will have the chance to see this history.
It's one colossal piece of landmark history most people never will and never have had the opportunity to learn about.

Glover est lavalas. Ce film sera pourri. C'est un ami relativement proche d'Aristide.
