Hip-Hop Star: LL Cool J est "The Man"

news James Todd Smith alias LL Cool J

En 1996, il a également aidé à lancer une ligne de vêtements appelée FUBU (For Us By Us).

news James Todd Smith III (born January 14, 1968), better known as LL Cool J

James Todd Smith III (born January 14, 1968), better known as LL Cool J, is an American hip hop artist and actor. He is best known for romantic ballads like "I Need Love" as well as pioneering pop rap like "I Can't Live Without My Radio", "I'm Bad", "Boomin' System", and "Mama Said Knock You Out" "4, 3, 2, 1". He has also appeared in several films. LL Cool J is one of a few hip-hop stars of his era to sustain a successful recording career for more than two decades. He has released 12 albums and a greatest hits compilation so far, with his next album, Exit 13, set to be released September 4, 2007. The album will be the last for LL's record deal with Def Jam Recordings, a deal which has lasted for over twenty two years, making it the longest single hip hop deal to date. LL Cool J stands for "Ladies Love Cool James."
[edit] Early years
Born in Bayshore, Long Island, James Todd Smith grew up in the working-class neighborhood of St. Albans, Queens, as the only child of James Smith, Jr. and Ondrea Smith -- Todd, as he would be known. He would spend his youth singing in the church choir, participating in the Boy Scouts and delivering paper as a paperboy.
Unfortunately, LL's parents had a troublesome, often violent, relationship. As a result, his mother left his father when LL was four and they moved in with her parents in St. Albans. The relationship turned bloody, when late one night in 1972, his father shot his mother after she returned home from work. According to LL Cool J, who recounted the event in the song "Father" from his Phenomenon album, the elder James was seeking revenge after being abandoned by his family. LL's father shot his mother as she ran into her parents' house for safety. She was hit in the legs and back. LL's grandfather was also shot in the stomach. Both survived the attack.
LL found that hip hop music and rapping were ways of escaping his problems. He grew up in a musical family; his grandfather played tenor saxophone, his mother played accordion and his grandmother, Ellen Griffith, sang in the choir. By age 11, LL was rapping, and by the age of 12, he had made his first studio recording.
LL Cool J lived in North Babylon, Long Island, New York with his mother in his junior high years

Thank you Bana for this biography on LL. I didn't know some of these facts about his parents history and a few other things you mentioned.
I've grown up becoming enlightened to a lighter version of hip hop through LL in comparison to NWA, PE and other more aggressive, but greats.
I always appreciated that he kept it relatively clean yet still touched on necessary topics so all cultures could learn and enjoy hip hop. In light of his history that I've read here, I'm more impressed with him.
It was great that you provided us all with these details in French and English...nice !

Where does this relate to his ties to Haiti....it's about LL and music. There are many topics and articles of interest on this site that don't necessarily have a direct link to Haiti. Is that a crime?
....and yes at least he does have some blood if you want to get really anal about it. Why are some people on here so against non-Haitians enjoying the site and it's contributions?
If others don't know about Haiti, we're ignorant and if we do....we're intrusive. Pardon me!

In bold...well...that is a hard pill to swallow...quite an offense! lol
Could we possibly move on...I think you just enjoy conflict a little too much. It's an article about a musician. It's not in the Haitian news section of events ..a little more diverse in music/arts and culture.
Let people choose what they like on the site. That's probably why there are so many guests and so few who comment. However; I bet a number of them feel this. Peace!

Darling, there's no conflict here. I just questionned the reasonning behind the author mentionning that he is "haitian" and then the person posting it BOLD'ing that part.
Like i've said before i get tired of haitian always out to prove that someone is haitian even when that someone has no clue or does not acknoledge or seem to NOT want to be associated with haitians. Its like some geeky highschool kid asking a girl out and getting rejected everytime yet still wanting to carry her books and walk her to class everyday. Loser mentality.
I'm not going to get back into that entire arguement again. Look up my comments in the "Ils sont haitiens ou d'origines haitiennes" thread and you'lll understand why i hate this.
Peace

...not sure about your high school analogy and its relationship..?? I recognize your angst and fatigue with the issues you've brought up. They are not my place or forum at all.
I'd be interested however in how he disregards his heritage. Should he sing about Haiti, lead roles are about the country, have a NGO project like Clef...idealistic!!
Does every Haitian hip hop star sing about being Haitian and the culture? ...or do they dish out the American recipe versions in lyric & rhyme & make it to production?
For those that do authentically...let me know...please!
I've just really liked him and he's alive, drug free, in shape, he's not so bad for kids (in comparison) and makes me go back in time with music. The whole point of my liking the article....he's still "doin it" !
