MONTREAL (AFP) - Canada's government announced it will host an international conference here on June 16-17 focused on supporting Haiti's political and economic development.
The authorities here said the conference will also focus on ways to boost Haitians' quality of life.
"I am pleased to welcome Haitis international partners to Montreal for this conference. As Haiti prepares to hold elections, maintaining the dialogue between Haitians and the international community is essential," Canada's Foreign Minister Pierre Pettigrew said in a statement.
The conference comes ahead of the first scheduled presidential and legislative ballots, since ex-president Jean Bertrand Aristide fled the Caribbean state in February of 2004, which are due to be held in Haiti on November 13 and December 18 respectively.
Haiti's transitional government is currently being overseen by Prime Minister Gerard Latortue. The country is the poorest state in the Americas.
"Canada is honoured to host Haiti's international partners in Montreal to work on a concerted strategy to ensure that fundamental rights and democratic values will continue to be respected during and after the election," Canada's Minister of International Cooperation Aileen Carroll added in the joint statement.
