It is kind of difficult to "tell" how to dance konpa, but I m going to help you the way I think is best. To dance konpa is to be relax every "pa" is a pa.(step) You can dance w' or w/o partner. Just move your body and foot w/ the music. It s not that hard if you find a companion, you wont have to worry about it. You ll be surprise as You will dance together the konpa rythm. Just follow your companion's steps youll be a pro after 2 rounds, I guarantee, just dont step on your companion's foot!

You should try attending some haitian parties. If you watch people dance, you'll be able to hold your own, not great but enough that if someone ask you to dance you won't have to back out due to fear.

Find a good partner...someone who can lead.
Listen of Haitian music...Listen for the beat...the base ...the rythm.
Learning to dance Haitian music is not like the waltz...you don't learn steps..You have to "feel" it.

Yup! Konpa isn't something you describe it's a dance you feel. It took me a long time to get it "right" but now that I'm doing it, parties are just so much better. Definitely find a good partner (my dad started me off then my brother just improved on what my dad taught me). It helps a lot of if you listen to the music on a regular basis it helps with "feeling" the music. To be honest also, compa/kompa/konpa is no different then some of the steps involved in latin music like marange, salsa etc. In the mean time go to parties, if you are in the NYC area, on June 30th there is a big party in Prospect park go have fun and learn.
