EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ (MNN) -
A second minute goal by Jean Philippe Peguero gave the New York Red Bulls the lead, but a 19th minute Ricardo Clark strike leveled the match at one.
While both teams had opportunities to score again, it wasn't in the cards. It was the Red Bulls seventh tie in their first ten games breaking their own league record which they set in last week's 1-1 draw at Kansas City.
The Red Bulls began the match with a perfect start. Youri Djorkaeff played a cross into the box that Houston goalkeeper Pat Onstad raced out to catch. As the goalkeeper reached for the ball, he collided with Peguero and the ball went loose.
The Haitian International got to the loose ball and slotted it into the empty the net for his fifth goal of the season.
The Red Bulls controlled the run of play for the first twenty minutes, but former New York midfielder Ricardo Clark made them pay.
In the 19th minute, Ronald Cerritos played a nice lateral pass to Ricardo Clark. The midfielder took a shot from 35 yards out that deflected off Red Bulls midfielder Mark Lisi and past a helpless Tony Meola. It was Clark's first time playing in Giants Stadium since being traded to San Jose.
The Red Bulls had the best chance of either side to take the lead and the victory in the 39th minute. Mark Lisi sent in a beautiful cross to a wide open Jeff Parke at the far post. The defender headed the ball towards a wide open net, but knocked the ball off the post and was unable to pounce on the rebound to put it away.
With the tie, the Red Bulls earn their tenth point of the season and move into a tie for fifth place in the conference. Houston moves up to second place in the western conference, three points behind conference leaders FC Dallas.
