Haitian wins Hampton 800m
Haiti's Moise Joseph led the charge for the invited athletes in the Men's Open 800 metre event on the opening day of the 32nd Hampton International Games yesterday at the Hasely Crawford Stadium.
Joseph strode to the line comfortably to get home first in one minute, 47.97 seconds, well ahead of last year's runner up Jerome Pilgrim, who clocked 1:54.54 to secure second spot, with John Warren of Concorde Athletics Club, third in 1:56.89 being the only T&T runner in the top three.
Palo Seco enjoyed a decent day on the track, with Abiola Glasgow clocking 11.10 seconds to win the 100m Boys Under-17 event ahead of Aaron Hernandez (Unattached) in 11.20.
In the Girls Under-17 version of this event, Lee Ann Stoute took Warriors to victory in 12.78, beating out the Palo Seco duo of Kelly Ann Blades (13.02) and Wynette Jarvis (13.28), who placed second and third respectively.
The Grenadian supporters also had reason to shout from the stands, as their countryman Akim Bowen clocked 50.35 to win the 400m event, bettering second placed Phillip Drayton (51.00) of Guyana and third-placed Schamel Paul of Hampton (52.94).
In the field, Antigua earned javelin gold through Ananda Edwards, who produced a 41.06 metre heave to win the event ahead of Success and Excellence's Venice Frederick (39.48) and Nikita Frederick (30.41) of Morvant Jets, who were second and third respectively.
American Ann Louise Larson dethroned compatriot Marisa Uzoara to win the Women's Open High Jump with a 1.73m effort, although she failed to clear the bar at 1.78.
Last night T&T's Marc Burns and Jacey Harper were expected to do battle in the Men's 100m event. Today is the second and final day of the Invitational meet.
