Mackey Might Defend Against Haitian Canadian resident Jean Pascal for the title.
The chief spokesperson from First Class Promotions informed the Bahama Journal on Thursday that talks are going on with a group in Canada regarding a title defense by WBC Caribbean Boxing Federation (CABOFE) super middleweight champion Jermain "Chu Chu" Mackey.
Michelle Minus disclosed that contact has been made by a Canadian group, headed by Don Majeski who wishes to have
Canadian resident Jean Pascal, a Haitian, challenge for the title.
It is proposed that the bout take place in Montreal on September 23. Mackey captured the CABOFE crown just last month, July 28, when he stopped Barbadian Marcus Thomas in the sixth round at the Radisson Hotel. Overnight, Mackey found himself in great demand.
First, Thomas wanted a rematch. Then, some boxing folks in the Dominican Republic indicated an interest. Canadian Matchmaker Majeski however seems to have the inside track at the moment. He is already talking purses and prepared it is understood, to pay upwards of $7,000.00 to get Mackey in a Canadian ring.
Minus although not prepared to make a commitment, said it looks like the fight could happen.
"I will not say yes totally. A lot of things have to be worked out. But I can say that Jermain could be going to Canada to defend. If the money and other circumstances are right, we will be there. But nothing is set yet," she hastened to say.
Mackey, 11-0, will be meeting in Pascal another unbeaten fighter. The native of Haiti is listed at 13-0 with 11 knockouts and has a solid French following in Montreal. Mackey in essence would be defending his title in the backyard of the challenger.
Nevertheless if he can make a successful defense he will climb further in the WBC ratings. His capturing of the CABOFE title all but guarantees him inclusion in the new ratings.
The young Bahamian?s objective is to step quickly up the ladder and land a world title fight. He will have to get through fighters like Pascal on the way to a shot at the world super middleweight title.
He told the Journal last month that he intends to remain in training "even after fights, so that I would be ready when opportunities come."
