Haiti, Jamaica & Mexico begin CFU Youth Cup Quarterfinals with victories
22.8.06 - The under-16 teams of Haiti, Jamaica and Mexico began the quarterfinal round of the 2006 Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Youth Cup in Trinidad & Tobago with victories on Monday.
Haiti opened Group A of the quarterfinals with a 7:1 win against Surinam at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium in Marabella. Saint Louis Wiselet had two goals, while Joseph Peterson, Alcine Samuel, Jules Sandy, St. Victor Ulterguens and Normil Valdo each added another for the Haitians.
In the other group encounter in Marabella, Barbados held the host, Trinidad & Tobago to a 1:1 draw. Edward Moss gave the bajans the led in the first half, but Leston Paul got the equaliser for the soca warriors with five minutes remaining.
Elsewhere on at the CFU Youth Cup Quarterfinals, Jamaica defeated the defending champion Canada by a score of 3:0 in a Group B match held at the Dwight York Stadium in Bacolet on Monday.
Kenniel Hyde, Dever Orgill and John Ross-Doyley all scored for the reggae boyz in the victory, while in an earlier Group B game, Mexico topped Panama 2:1.
The annual CFU U-16 tournament continues on Wednesday with Group A Quarterfinals at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva when Barbados takes on Haiti and then Trinidad & Tobago greets Surinam. In Group B action on Wednesday in Bacolet will feature Jamaica against Panama and then Mexico facing Canada. COMPLETE FIXTURES
The winners of each group will compete for the CFU Youth Cup title on 27 August, while the two second-place teams from each group play in the third-place encounter earlier in the day.
The 2006 CFU Youth Cup is also doubling as the Caribbean Preliminary Qualification to the CONCACAF Under-17 Final Round where the best two CFU teams (excluding Jamaica) will advance to the group games due to take place in April 2007.
