Haitian Men Exceeding Expectations At 11th Caribbean Volleyball Championships.
Like their female team that fell to the Bahamas on Monday night the men players from Haiti have only been practicing for the past two months, but they have been making their presence felt at the 11th Caribbean Volleyball Championships.
After pushing the defending champion from Barbados to the brink in a Monday five -set loss, on Tuesday they ran through Guadeloupe in straight sets 26-24, 25-23 and 25-21 to take their record to 1-1.
Both teams had big hitters and played good defense and the first two sets could have gone either way. However, it Haiti which won most of the crucial points.
The first half of the third set was also competitive, but after Guadeloupe fell behind 18-22 the players seemed to be deflated and any thoughts of mounting a comeback went out of the window.
For Haiti, Eduardo Dimitri was the nail driver as he had a number of monster kills to lead his team with 11. Ralph Adolpher had seven kills.
On defense for the Haitians, Vladimir Louis had 16 big blocks including two that fell for points.
On the other side of the floor, the team that turned back the Bahamas in five tough sets was led on offense by hard-hitter Bruno Cotellon with 13 kills. Team Captain Jacque Lux had 10 kills.
Willy Babel had 11 blocks with two falling for points. Adalbert Ingraham from the Bahamas and Winston Samuel from Trinidad and Tobago were the referees.
After the game Joseph Larrieux said, "I am pleased with my team?s performance especially after the limited amount of practice we were able to get. Yesterday we played Barbados the defending champions very tough and today we beat a very good team from Guadeloupe."
Thinking about the match (tonight) with The Bahamas he said, "This will be a big game because we have a large Haitian community in here and The Bahamas needs to win, so both sides will be playing hard."
With Haiti showing such prowess, the Bahamian men now 0-1, must win to stay in the race for one of the two top spots in the pool which includes Haiti, Guadeloupe, and defending champion Barbados who is 2-0 after defeating Dominica in straight sets on Tuesday 29-27, 25-8 and 25-22.
Also on Tuesday, the men from Trinidad and Tobago defeated the US Virgin Islands in straight sets 25-13, 25-17 and 25-18 for their first victory.
