Haiti progress to CONCACAF Final Round
24.8.06 - The under-16 teams of Haiti, Mexico and the host, Trinidad & Tobago all posted wins in quarterfinal action on Wednesday at the 2006 Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Youth Cup.
Two goals from Stephen Knox led Trinidad & Tobago to a 4:0 victory over Surinam in a Group A encounter at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva.
In the other Group A match in Couva, Haiti earned a spot into the next round, with a match remaining, of the CFU Youth Cup after a 5:0 win against Barbados on Wednesday.
Alcine Samuel and Normil Valdo each scored twice on Wednesay for the Haitians who also secured one of the two Caribbean berths (excluding Jamaica) to the CONCACAF Under-17 Final Round next year.
Elsewhere at the CFU Youth Cup Quarterfinals, Jamaica played Panama to a 1:1 draw in Group B action at the Dwight York Stadium in Bacolet on Wednesday. Javier De La Rosa gave the canaleros the lead in the first half, but Dever Orgill scored the equaliser for the reggae boyz with five minutes remaining.
Meanwhile, in the other Group B encounter in Bacolet, goals from Raul Nava and Carlos Alberto Peña helped Mexico defeat the defending champion Canada by a score of 2:1.
The winners of each group will compete for the CFU Youth Cup title on 27 August, while the two second-place teams from each group play in the third-place encounter earlier in the day.
The 2006 CFU Youth Cup is also doubling as the Caribbean Preliminary Qualification to the CONCACAF Under-17 Final Round where another CFU team (excluding Jamaica) will advance along with Haiti to the group games due to take place in April 2007.
