By CONCACAF's decision, Copa Caribe will now be part of the Gold Cup and will be called, Gold Cup Caribbean finals to be held in Trinidad & Tobago from 13-24 November 2002. The top 3 teams from this competition will advance to the Gold Cup finals. The fourth team will playoff with a Central American team. Last year at Copa Caribe 2001, Haiti finished in second place behind Trinidad & Tobago, the score in the Final was T&T 3:0 Haiti. Martinique finished in third place, and Cuba had to playoff against Panama for a spot in Gold Cup 2002.
16 teams, 4 groups of 4 teams from Group A to Group D, will play in the Gold Cup Caribbean finals. Saint Lucia recently joined Trinidad & Tobago, St. Kitts & Nevis and Dominica in Group A , with an 8:1 victory against British Virgin Islands, winning 11:2 on aggregate in the two-leg series.
Haiti will be in a relatively easy group " D" with Antigua & Barbuda, and the winners of Guyana Vs Netherlands Antilles (1st Leg Guyana 2:1 Netherlands Antilles ) and Suriname Vs Aruba (1st Leg Suriname 2:0 Aruba). Last year Haiti was in Group "B" with Cuba, St. Kitts/Nevis and Surinam. The Haitian national team recently cut short the training in France and a planned training session in Italy due to lack of funds. Gold Cup Caribbean finals is only about three months away, the " Federation Haitienne de Football" remains unresponsive about Haiti's plan and preparations.
