Haiti win opener, Dominican Republic and Barbados tie. U-17 World Cup Qualifiers

24.10.02 - Haiti defeated Cayman Islands 5:1, while Barbados and hosts Dominican Republic played to a 2:2 tie Wednesday on the first day of matches in Caribbean Zone qualifying Group C in the FC Under-17 Junior Tournament in San Cristobal.
Haiti controlled the day?s first encounter from the outset. The Haitians penetrated the Cayman defence several times before eventually hitting home through Wilson Blanc in the 21st minute. Maintaining their pressure on Mario Dinnall?s goal after getting on the board, the Haitians doubled their lead on the half hour when Yveson Etienne put his effort past Dinnall?s best effort.
After falling behind by two goals, Cayman Islands launched an all-out attack in an effort to trim the lead before the interval. Their efforts eventually bore fruit at the stroke of halftime, Jared Yates connecting to give them momentum.
Haiti were quick to turn the match back in their favor in the second half, beginning it much like they had the first, increasing the lead to 3:1 on the hour through Renaldo Gustave. Again continuing to press forward after finding the net, second-half substitutes Stevenson Saintilus and Michel-Ange Paul added tallies in the final 20 minutes to put the Haitians on three points and atop the group after the first day.
In the second match, Dominican Republic overcame a halftime deficit to tie Barbados 2:2 and leave both teams looking up at Haiti when group play resumes on Friday.
Barbados got on the board early, Quincy Atherley silencing the home crowd with a blast in the 10th minute that found the goal behind Ricardo Cabrera.
The hosts were quick to answer, however, Darly Batista netting his first of two goals on the afternoon in the 22nd minute after finding a hole in the visitors? defence. After Batista?s goal, Barbados again took to the attack, Javon Searles giving them the halftime lead ten minutes before the interval.
Again, Barbados? lead was short-lived, Batista finding the net behind Barbados ?keeper Kareem Farrell and deadlocking the match and frustrating the visitors. In fact, the hosts had a chance to go ahead in the final 20 minutes after Theo Griffin was sent off for Barbados, but were unable to put much of an attack together as Barbados clamped down defensively and kept the game tied until the final whistle.
Haiti and Barbados will meet in Friday?s first game with Dominican Republic and Cayman Islands face-off in the nightcap. The winner of Group C will Jamaica, winners of Group B, in the final round of Caribbean Zone qualifying.
