01.12.02 - Haiti continued their impressive run, defeating Nicaragua 2:0, while Costa Rica posted a 1:0 victory over Honduras Saturday, propelling both teams into Wednesday?s semifinals in the football competition at the XIX Central American and Caribbean Games in San Salvador.
In the day?s opening match at Estadio Cuscatlán, Haiti scored two first-half goals and overcame the expulsion of a player in the second half to record the win.
Haiti took the lead Nicaragua on the quarter-hour as Romulus Turlein found an opening in the defence, Jean-Jude Maceus then doubling the advantage to 2:0 in the 39th minute.
In the second half the Haitians were dealt a severe blow with the ejection of full international striker Charles Alerte Jr. just after the hour, but maintained their poise and now will face the winner of the El Salvador ? Honduras match in Wednesday?s first semifinal.
In a game full of scoring chances for either side, it was an 11th-minute penalty that did Honduras in against Costa Rica.
In an attempt to stop a Costa Rica attack in the area, Honduras? Alex Andino knocked down a pass with his hand, and Alvaro Saborio stepped up to the ball and put his shot off the crossbar and into the net behind ?keeper Donis Escobar.
Despite having the majority of the chances - and playing with a man advantage after Verny Scoth was sent off for his second yellow card in the 76th minute, Honduras were unable put any shots past Costa Rica ?keeper Neighel Drummond. With the win, Costa Rica draws the winner of Sunday?s match between Mexico and Guatemala in Wednesday?s second semifinal.
