04.12.02 - Hosts El Salvador recorded a 1:0 win over Haiti, while Mexico overcame a strong effort to knock off Costa Rica by the same score of Wednesday in the semifinals of the football competition at the XIX Central American and Caribbean games at Estadio Cuscatlán in San Salvador.
El Salvador and Mexico will now face one another in Saturday?s final, also being played at the Cuscatlán, while Haiti and Costa Rica meet in the third place match earlier in the day. Should the hosts win the championship, they would equal Venezuela?s winning performance as host of the 1998 CAC games in Maracaribo.
José Antonio Mejía scored the only goal in Wednesday?s first match, converting off the counter-attack on the quarter hour to give the hosts the lead for good.
Although Haiti took shots than did El Salvador in the match, they were unable to find their target, getting nothing past ?keeper Luis Castillo.
Meanwhile, in the evening?s second encounter, Mexico broke a scoreless tie after the hour and made the goal stand up as the also were victorious by a 1:0 scoreline.
Omar Monjarraz found the net on his 68th minute shot that somehow got through a variety of defenders in the area, propelling the tricolores into the final.
