In my opinion Jorge Casteli, ex-coach of San Lorenzo was the best coach Haiti had recently. He got to know the team and played formations that accentuated the skills of the Haitian players.
What happenned to him?: Haiti went on a tour in France where they played against first division teams. The schedule was a game every other day for about 3 weeks. On the first game Bordeaux 5:3 Haiti, not bad, but the loosing streak extended and the experience was getting less and less productive. A soccer game every two days is too much and the losses could potentially affect the morale of the players.

What should have been done?: Haitians like to win, so after a few losses the training tour was cut short due to lack of fundings. A few months later Jorge Casteli left due to lack of fundings. Haiti had never been in any kind of extensive training were they got to play against World Cup level players. After this experience, if they had continued their tour, with proper psychological counseling, the players would have emerged better players, and the coach would have been a better coach. Instead the Federation Haitienne de football, hired two argentine clowns to coach the Haitian team. All the sudden due to lack of respectable leadership, the most disciplined player, Bruny Pierre-Richard was a bad apple in the team.

What should be done now?: The Federation Haitienne de football need to change their mentality of getting something for nothing. In order to become winners, you need to learn how to loose. On a tour like the one that Haiti went on in France, loosing does not mean anything, the coach can decide to try new game plans and experiment with the formation. Or the coach can decide to test their defense to discover where they can find holes in it. Now the Federation need to hire a respectable coach for the national team. One who has coached at least a renowned first division team in the top leagues of South-America. Maybe they can't touch europe yet moneywise, but a european coach would work as well.

Why a foreign coach?: There are very good Haitian coaches with proper formation and degrees in Haiti, but I can count them with my finger tips. Also, the foreign coaches get their experience at a higher level of play. The last time a Haitian club won the Concacaf Champion's Cup was in 1984 (Violette) almost 20 years ago. The coaches from the Mexican league reach the finals every year. Thus to get the most we can get for our money we need to select a technical director from a bigger pool of talent.
