CALGARY -- Osvaldo Jeanty, who led Carleton to its fourth consecutive basketball title, and Marylene Laplante, who helped Laval win its first volleyball championship, were named winners of the BLG Awards yesterday as the top male and female athletes in Canadian Interuniversity Sport.
Jeanty, 22, and Laplante, 25, both received a trophy and a $10,000 scholarship to attend a Canadian university graduate school. The BLG Awards, formerly the Howard Mackie Awards, are based on athletic accomplishments, outstanding sportsmanship, leadership ability, and academic excellence in Canadian university sports.
Jeanty, a commerce student from Gloucester, is the first Raven to win a BLG Award.
The 6-foot, fourth-year guard was named the CIS basketball player of the year and the most valuable player of the CIS championship for the second time. He also was player of the game in the national final for the fourth consecutive year.
During his four seasons with the Ravens, Jeanty's regular-season and playoff record is 101-4.
This season the Ravens captain averaged 14.8 points a game. He also made 62 three-point shots and was 85.9% from the free-throw line.
At the CIS Final 10 in Halifax, the native of Bel-Riviere, Haiti, averaged 23.8 points a game.
"He is without a doubt the best clutch player I've ever seen," said coach Dave Smart.
"Nothing fazes him."
